Matt Lofton No. 16 Strutmasters.com Illinois State Fair Pre-Race Report
Friday August 24, 2012
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (August 16, 2012) – Matt Lofton and the No. 16 Strutmasters.com, Coulter Motorsports Chevrolet team head to historic Springfield, Ill. this weekend for the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards Allen Crowe 100.
Marking the season’s first stop at a dirt track only proves to showcase that the ARCA Racing Series is the most diversified tour in the world. Spanning all facets of racing, from paved short tracks, intermediates, superspeedways and a road course along with two dirt events, tests a drivers ability to be versatile. While the city of Springfield may be steeped in our nations great history as the one time home of President Abraham Lincoln, the current capital of Illinois is also the longtime home of the Springfield Dirt Mile at the ever-popular Illinois State Fairgrounds. A horse track for most of the year, the 1.00-mile oval takes on the 800-hp ARCA stock cars to cap off the annual state fair each year.
While Lofton, like many of his competitors, has never raced on dirt, the 2012 Rookie of the Year contender doesn’t shy away from a new challenge. Lofton has spent considerable time with Coulter Motorsports teammate Joey Coulter, who had a top-five at the Springfield Mile in 2010 and currently competes in the Carolina Clash Series in a dirt super late model. The Roxboro, N.C. native has also studied the differing characteristics of the dirt, noting the constant changes to a track’s surface and the constant need to adapt.
“It is really exciting for me to take on this new challenge of dirt track racing,” said Lofton. “It is something that I have never done in a stockcar and I feel it will only help diversify me as a well rounded driver. My Coulter Motorsports crew has raced Springfield before and they along with Joey (Coulter) have helped me figure it out before even setting eyes on it. It should be a great race weekend and I look forward to taking the No. 16 Strutmasters.com Chevrolet to the front.”
Racing action from the Illinois State Fair kicks off Sunday with a lone practice session from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. followed by Menards pole qualifying at 11:00 a.m. The green flag is set to wave over the Allen Crowe 100 at 1:00 p.m. (All times Central.)
