Becca's Big Six: Richmond Edition

Becca Gladden · Tuesday May 9, 2006

Editor’s Note: In our ever expanding world of the Frontstretch, we have yet another new column to debut…starting this week, FS Writer Becca Gladden tackles each week’s race from a reporter’s point of view…Who, What, Where, Why, When, and How things went down in the Nextel Cup world over the past week. Her first edition is below…enjoy!

Who ... else noticed that Greg Biffle’s luck improved dramatically in Richmond, just days after my list of “Top Ten things Greg Biffle is Doing to Insure a Better Finish in Richmond” was posted on Frontstretch.com? Is there any doubt that his turnaround in both the Busch and Cup races is directly attributable to that column?

What ... one quality keeps Jimmie Johnson at or near the top of the point standings every week? Simply his team’s ability to recover from adversity by race’s end. The 48 team proved this again at Richmond, converting a pit road problem which left him a lap down for much of the race to a 12th-place finish and keeping him atop the leaderboard again this week.

When ... have we been treated to a better version of the National Anthem than Saturday’s stirring rendition by the U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corps? Attention Track Owners: That’s how it should be done. Always.

Where ... in recent weeks has Kurt Busch shot himself in the foot more than he did this weekend at Richmond? Busch was cited not once but twice for pit road violations, including pitting outside his box and speeding exiting pit road. Busch finished the race 29th and fell two spots in the standings to 18th.

Why ... did the commentators at Fox make it sound like Kevin Harvick was in a snit after the race, refusing to be interviewed? Harvick appeared on Speed TV’s Victory Lane program before leaving the track and could not have been more congenial despite a very disappointing loss.

How ... many times did reporters have to ask Denny Hamlin if his injured hand hurt (a story Frontstretch broke first last week), and whether he thought it would affect him in the race? Look folks, when you get 19 stitches, it’s gonna hurt. Bothersome? Yes. Incapacitating? No. Next question.
