NASCAR Nationwide Series Live in Prime Time from St. Louis on ESPN2
ESPN2 continues its season-long coverage of the NASCAR Nationwide Series with a live, prime-time telecast of the event from Gateway International Raceway near St. Louis on Saturday, July 19, beginning at 9 p.m. ET with NASCAR Countdown. The telecast from the 1.25-mile track also airs in high definition on ESPN2 HD, and is simulcast on ESPN360.com, ESPNMobileTV and ESPN Deportes.
Dr. Jerry Punch will be ESPN2’s lead announcer, joined in the booth for analysis by 1999 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Dale Jarrett, one of the founding drivers of the NASCAR Nationwide Series, and two-time NASCAR Cup champion crew chief Andy Petree. Dave Burns, Mike Massaro and Shannon Spake will report from the pits, while D.J. Copp, a member of Bobby Labonte’s NASCAR pit crew and a frequent contributor to ESPN’s NASCAR Now, will fill in for analyst Tim Brewer in the ESPN Tech Center. Punch also hosts NASCAR Countdown.
NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Landon Cassill joins the ESPN team as In-Race Reporter and will talk to Jarrett on the race’s pace laps and during caution periods.
ESPN2 also airs coverage of qualifying for the event at 5 p.m. on Saturday, and coverage of final practice on Friday, July 18, at 7 p.m.
NASCAR Now Expands Monday for Roundtable Discussion of NASCAR Weekend
The Monday, July 21, edition of NASCAR Now will expand to an hour and will include host Allen Bestwick leading a roundtable discussion with ESPN analysts and reporters of the weekend’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Gateway International Raceway and the upcoming Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, the first NASCAR Sprint Cup race of the season to be televised by ESPN. The program airs at its new time of 5 p.m. ET.
Half-hour episodes of NASCAR Now air Monday through Friday of this week at 6 p.m.
NASCAR Now is hosted by Ryan Burr, Nicole Manske and Bestwick and originates from ESPN’s high definition studios in Bristol, Conn. Contributors include NASCAR Insiders Marty Smith and Angelique Chengelis, analysts Ray Evernham, Tim Brewer, Brad Daugherty, Boris Said and Tim Cowlishaw, ESPN.com reporters Ed Hinton, Terry Blount and David Newton and D.J. Copp, a member of Bobby Labonte’s NASCAR team.
NASCAR Now viewers also benefit from frequent contributions by the NASCAR on ESPN team including Rusty Wallace, Dale Jarrett, Dr. Jerry Punch, Andy Petree, Dave Burns, Jamie Little, Mike Massaro and Shannon Spake.
ESPN Classic Features Inaugural Brickyard 400 on Monday
ESPN kicks off its 2008 coverage of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series with a live telecast of the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard from Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday, July 27. On Monday, July 21, at noon ET, ESPN Classic will show the inaugural Brickyard 400 won by Jeff Gordon from the 1994 season.
Gordon’s victory ushered in NASCAR racing at the famed Indianapolis track, which until that time had only hosted the Indianapolis 500.
Clint Bowyer Featured on ESPN2’s Driven to Hunt Sunday
NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series star Clint Bowyer will be featured on an episode of the ESPN2 series Driven to Hunt on Sunday, July 20, at 7 a.m. ET. The program repeats at 9:30 a.m.
Kansas native Bowyer heads back to Kansas for his first ever deer hunt. Joined by Bill Jordan, Richard Childress, and Terry and Bobby Labonte, Bowyer is initiated into this fraternity of hunters right from the start.
Each week, Driven to Hunt will invite a prominent NASCAR personality on a once-in-a-lifetime hunt. From drivers to team owners to the over-the-wall gang, hunting is what they dream about. Guests this season include drivers Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer, Terry and Bobby Labonte and Kerry Earnhardt, and NASCAR team owner Richard Childress.
IndyCar Series Live on ABC Sunday from Mid-Ohio
The IndyCar Series returns to road course racing this weekend and ABC airs live coverage of the Honda IndyCar Grand Prix at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course Sunday, July 20, at 1:30 p.m. ET. A replay airs Monday, July 21, at 8 a.m. on ESPN Classic.
Marty Reid will call the action with analysis by former IndyCar Series star Scott Goodyear. Jack Arute, Brienne Pedigo and Vince Welch report from the pits.
Also on the air this week is action from the Firestone Indy Lights Series, the developmental series for the IndyCar Series. Highlights from the recent event at Nashville Superspeedway air Thursday, July 17, at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN2.
NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Continues Western Swing on ESPN2
The NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series continues its western swing this weekend, and ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD will have coverage of qualifying and final eliminations for the Schuck’s Auto Supply NHRA Nationals from Pacific Raceways near Seattle. Qualifying coverage airs Saturday, July 19, at 8 p.m. ET, with eliminations coverage airing Sunday, July 20, at 9 p.m. Eliminations re-air Monday, July 21, at 11 a.m. on ESPN Classic.
In one of the tour’s most breathtaking environments, Pacific Raceways is surrounded by towering pine trees and parked in the shadow of majestic Mount Rainier. The trees add more than beauty at the middle stop on the Western Swing: they also emit tons of power-enhancing oxygen to feed the appetites of the high-horsepower machines, resulting in prime performances.
Paul Page anchors coverage for ESPN2, with analysis by 22-time NHRA winner Mike Dunn. Gary Gerould and Dave Rieff report from the pits. Rieff and Dunn co-host NHRA RaceDay on Sunday at 11 a.m. to set the stage for that day’s eliminations action.
NHRA Fans Can Relive Events on ESPN Classic
Fans of the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series will have opportunities all week to relive some of the great events of the 2005 season as ESPN Classic opens the archives and brings the events back to life on TV. The programs air at 11 a.m. ET Tuesday through Friday of this week, and Monday of next week.
On Tuesday, July 15, fans can watch the action of the 2005 O’Reilly NHRA Mid-South Nationals from Memphis, while Wednesday’s program features the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals from Indianapolis. The Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals from Reading, Pa., air Thursday with the Ameriquest NHRA Nationals from Joliet, Ill., airing Friday.
ESPN2 is the home for the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series and the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series.
