Strong Start for Kevin Harvick at Texas Ends with 29th-Place Finish After Part Failure
FORT WORTH, Texas (November 3, 2008) — Kevin Harvick and the No. 33 Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) Camping World Chevrolet started the O’Reilly Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway from the second position, then lead twice for 23 laps before a broken rear axle dropped them to a 29th-place finish.
Harvick secured the outside pole for Saturday’s O’Reilly Challenge and wasted no time taking the lead on lap one. Leading the first 22 laps of the 200-lap event, Harvick soon began fighting tight handling conditions. The team opted to pit on lap 50 under caution for four tires, fuel and adjustments, leading one lap on pit road. On the lap 53 restart, Harvick was in the fifth position.
Continuing to run in fifth place, Harvick was fighting extremely tight conditions and decided to pit on lap 108 under green-flag conditions. Following the stop, the team examined the tires and found a hole in the right-rear tire, contributing to the tight condition as the tire was going flat. After the stop, Harvick was scored in the 17th position, one lap down. Staying out under the lap 113 caution, Harvick restarted in the 13th position at the tail-end of the lead lap.
Fighting to stay on the lead lap, Harvick was able to keep the No. 33 Camping World Chevrolet in front of the race leader and after a caution on lap 149 and a routine pit stop on lap 151, restarted the race on lap 155 in 11th place.
By lap 161, Harvick moved into the eighth position. With the car starting to tighten up again, the team again pitted on lap 180 under caution for four tires, fuel and an adjustment to help with the handling of the car. As Harvick exited the pit box, the rear axle broke causing the team to bring the No. 33 car behind the wall. Following repairs to the car, Harvick re-entered the race six laps down in the 31st position. Able to gain two spots in the final laps, Harvick crossed the finish line in 29th place.
