Team Race Preview
NASCAR Nationwide Series Race 9 of 35 – Richmond (Va.) International Raceway
LOOKING FOR NO. 5: Kevin Harvick will return to the No. 33 Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) Rheem Tankless Hot Water Heaven Chevrolet this week at Richmond (Va.) Intenational Raceway (RIR). When Harvick climbs behind the wheel, he will be looking for his fifth win at the .75-mile track and the fifth win for KHI in the Nationwide Series.
In 16 previous Nationwide Series starts at the track, Harvick has compiled an oustanding record of four wins, 10 top-five and 12 top-10 finishes. His average start is 8.6 with an average finish of 7.6. He has completed 4005 of 4011 laps attempted (99.9 percent).
ON THE MOVE: The No. 33 KHI Chevrolet now sits first in the NASCAR Nationwide Series Owner’s Point Standings following a second-place finish at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway. This season the team has utilized four different drivers, but has consistently finished well. In eight previous starts this season, the team has earned one win, six top-five finishes and an 11th-place and 29th-place finish. The victory was Harvick’s first win in a KHI-owned car.
JOINING FORCES: Rheem and KHI partner Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) will join together this weekend at RIR to host 100 veterans from Walter Reed Medical Army Center for a hospitality event on Friday, May 1. The soldiers will enjoy an afternoon of appearances by more than a dozen Nationwide Series drivers, including Cale Gale, Brad Keselowski, Eric McClure, Scott Lagasse Jr., Stephen Leicht and Jason Keller, as well as appearances by KHI co-owner DeLana Harvick, Richard Childress and Ryan Newman. All of the soldiers will receive grandstand seats to watch Friday nights Lipton Tea 250.
BEFORE THE RACE: QUOTES WITH DRIVER KEVIN HARVICK:
Do you approach RIR as more of a short track or a speedway?
“It really is a little of both. I think you have to go in with the short-track mindset. There is more contact at Richmond than you have at a bigger track. I think sometimes drivers use the short track as an excuse to beat and bang, but as tight as the racing is there, it’s hard to not have incidental contact.”
Do you enjoy racing at Richmond?
“Richmond is one of those places where I really enjoy racing. You can move the car all over the race track. It seems like the groove moves around as the race goes on. I also enjoy racing at night and I think everybody enjoys the cooler temperatures and the night atmosphere. Richmond is one of those places I am really comfortable racing.
“We got our first win this season, came close to a few more wins and now we’re looking to score another win this weekend at Richmond in the Rheem Tankless Hot Water Heaven Chevrolet. We’re bringing the car that we won Bristol with and hopefully at the end of the day, we can get it back in Victory Lane for KHI and Rheem.”
On what makes racing on a flat track more enjoyable? “There’s a lot of braking. You have to really work on getting your car through the center of the corner and still having the forward bite you need up off the corner so you get all three aspects of the car, the driver and the set-up all in one.”
RIR ONE YEAR AGO: At this race one year ago, a dominant Harvick led 98 laps and finished a strong second in the No. 33 Rheem Chevrolet.
CHASSIS HISTORY: This week the No. 33 Rheem Tankless Hot Water Heaven team will unload chassis No. 041 from the KHI stables. Having been on track earlier this season, this chassis holds a special meaning to Harvick and wife DeLana. Chassis No. 041 is the chassis Harvick piloted at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway earlier this season to earn his fifth career win at the World’s Fastest Half-Mile, his 33rd career win in the Nationwide Series and most importantly, his first Nationwide Series win in a KHI-owned car.
PREVIOUS RACE RECAP: Ryan Newman made his first career Nationwide Series start last weekend at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway and his first start this season in the No. 33 KHI Rheem Chevrolet. Newman started from the pole position, his first superspeedway pole in one of NASCAR’s top-three series and after running most of the day up in the top 10, finished in the second position. Falling as far back as 23rd during the race, Newman quickly made his way back to the front on several occasions. Leading the race on the final lap, the No. 5 of Dale Earnhardt Jr. pulled to the outside of Newman to make a pass for the lead, but as Newman blocked the No. 5 car, the middle lane opened and David Ragan passed Newman to win his first race in one of NASCAR’s top-three series. Newman led the race for 21 laps on three different occasions.
