Harvick Records Fifth-Place Finish at Michigan

BROOKLYN, Mich. (August 16, 2009) — Returning to the Irish Hills of Michigan, Kevin Harvick and the No. 33 Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) Jimmy John’s team started the CARFAX 250 at Michigan International Speedway from the ninth position. With good adjustments throughout the race and a solid day on pit road, the No. 33 team earned a fifth-place finish and gained one spot in the Owner’s Point standings, moving into fifth place.

“We struggled a little this weekend with our Jimmy John’s Chevrolet,” said Harvick following the race. “We were a 10th to 15th-place car, but with solid pit stops and adjustments throughout the race, we were able to pull off another top-five finish. Ernie (Cope, crew chief) made the right calls on pit road, especially on the last run when we took on tires and left the fuel out to keep from having extra weight in the car, and the pit crew has really stepped up and had one of their best days all year. They kept us in contention on pit road and it paid off with a solid finish.”

With the race under way, Harvick slipped outside the top 10, but quickly gathered the car back and began his move toward the front, taking over the sixth position on lap 14. Continuing to run in sixth, Harvick radioed the team on lap 19 that he needed more rear grip.

Fighting a car that was tight in the front end and loose in the back, Harvick was in the ninth position when the call was made for the first scheduled green-flag pit stop of the day. Pitting on lap 40, the team changed four tires with an air-pressure adjustment and added fuel. Several laps later, the caution flag waved and the team opted to stay out to gain positions on the track. The race restarted on lap 49 with Harvick in the 11th spot.

Making his way back inside the top 10, the car was again loose and Harvick began losing positions. Approaching the end of the fuel run, Harvick again made a green-flag pit stop on lap 89, adding four tires, fuel and going down three rounds on the track bar. With the stops cycling through the field, the No. 33 Jimmy John’s Chevrolet was ninth on lap 95.

Continuing to run in the top 10, Harvick was still fighting the handling of the car. The caution flag waved again on lap 105 and the team decided to pit from the 10th position for four tires with an air-pressure adjustment and reversing the track bar changes. With another solid stop by the team, Harvick restarted the race in the ninth position on lap 113.

With teams on varying strategies of two and four fresh tires, Harvick was able to pick off several cars and finish the 125-lap race in the fifth position. Brad Keselowski won his third race of the season, followed by Brian Vickers, Kyle Busch, David Ragan and Harvick.
