Earnhardt Jr. giving young driver opportunity to shine at Memphis
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Oct. 15, 2009) – JR Motorsports announced today it will enter its No. 5 Chevrolet in the Oct. 24 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Memphis Motorsports Park to give its late model driver of three years, Richard Boswell, the opportunity to make his Nationwide Series debut. Boswell’s car will be sponsored by RCCA, which is owned and operated by Motorsports Authentics. RCCA is the premier club for motorsports fans and collectors and exclusive supplier of RCCA Elite diecasts.
The No. 5 team was originally slated for 21 races this season, the last of which was to be this weekend at Lowe’s Motor Speedway with Tony Stewart. The addition of Memphis makes Boswell the seventh driver in a steady 2009 line-up, including team owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. (7 races), Scott Wimmer (6), Ryan Newman (4), Ron Fellows (2), Mark Martin (1) and Stewart (1).
“Boswell is a tremendous talent, and he has done well with our late model program,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “He’s been with the company for several years, and we feel like he’s earned this opportunity to race at Memphis. The No. 5 team has tested with him, and he’s a solid short-track racer, so we’re hopeful for positive results at Memphis.”
A 25-year-old native of Friendship, Md., Boswell has been racing with JR Motorsports since 2006, piloting late model entries in both the USAR and the UARA Series. In 58 races, Boswell has earned three wins, 18 top-fives, 34 top-10 finishes and six poles. Prior to joining JRM, he graduated with honors from the motorsports engineering program at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
“Racing the No. 5 Chevrolet was something we have been talking about for a while now,” Boswell said. “We were finally able to make it happen, because we had the resources and people in place at JR Motorsports to attempt this at Memphis. I’m absolutely thrilled at the opportunity.
“It’s definitely a little overwhelming coming in here and racing guys that are the best at what they do, but this is probably the best chance I’m going to get to prove myself. I really just want to come in here, qualify for the race and get a solid finish. I think if we’re able to do that, I will call it a success.”
Crew chief Brian Campe and Tony Eury Jr. will assist Boswell’s transition into the Nationwide Series at Memphis from atop the pit box.
