Z-Line Designs Driver Wins Fourth Straight Nationwide Series Race in Lone Star State
Date: Nov. 7, 2009
Event: O’Reilly Challenge (Round 33 of 35)
Series: NASCAR Nationwide Series
Location: Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth (1.5-mile oval)
Start/Finish: 6th/1st (Running, completed 200 of 200 laps)
Winner: Kyle Busch of Joe Gibbs Racing (Toyota)
Kyle Busch, driver of the No. 18 Z-Line Designs/WWE SmackDown® vs. Raw® 2010 (THQ, ESRB: T) Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) put the “smackdown” on the field with a dominating victory in Saturday’s O’Reilly Challenge NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth.
Busch led six times for a race-high 179 laps en route to his 29th career Nationwide Series victory, his series-leading eighth of the season and his fourth consecutive at Texas.
“We out-wrestled all these guys with this Smackdown vs. Raw Camry,” said Busch, who has led an astonishing 657 of 800 laps during his four-race victory streak in the Lone Star State. “I’ve got to thank Z-Line Designs, Jim and Monica Sexton, NOS Energy Drink, Gillette, DIRECTV, the fans, of course, and all the guys on this team. This track is fun. It’s fun when you have good cars. These guys do a phenomenal job for me.
“We’ve been running well all year long and we’ve been able to capitalize on good runs. This is one that we capitalized on. This is eight on the year. Unfortunately, we missed out on 11 others – those were second-place finishes. When you get to victory lane, it’s cool that you can get your team to victory lane and really celebrate with them because those are the guys that deserve to be here.”
The victory also helped Busch inch closer to his first Nationwide Series championship, which he can clinch next week by finishing 15th or better at Phoenix International Raceway. Busch owns a commanding 272-point lead over second-place Carl Edwards and an incredible 1,025-point advantage over fourth-place Jason Leffler.
“It’s pretty cool,” said Busch, who has never won a championship in any of NASCAR’s top-three divisions. “It feels awesome. It’s all in these guys and what they do and the hours they spend. Jason (Ratcliff, crew chief) reading the books, reading the computer and looking over all the notes. A lot of the guys on this team have worked really hard and deserve it. The ‘20’ team won the owner’s championship last year and now that the ‘18’ team is heading toward a championship, it shows the whole JGR team is championship worthy.”
For the 28th time in his young career, Busch is competing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series races in the same weekend. With his victory Friday night in the Camping World Truck Series race at Texas, coupled with his Nationwide Series victory on Saturday, Busch will look to make history in Sunday’s Dickies 500 Sprint Cup Series race by becoming the first drive to ever win all three races in one weekend.
“I hope it happens. It would be awesome and it’s never been done before,” Busch said. “The last one is always the hardest, and that’s because it’s the biggest and hardest show to win. We’ll see if we can get it. The closest I’ve come was first, first and third earlier this year at California.”
Finishing second to Busch by 3.154 seconds was Casey Mears, while Leffler, Matt Kenseth and Brad Keselowski rounded out the top-five. Kevin Harvick, Brian Vickers, David Ragan, Edwards and Mike Bliss comprised the remainder of the top-10.
The race featured seven caution periods for 34 laps, with 21 drivers failing to finish the 200-lap event.
The next event on the Nationwide Series schedule is the Nov. 14 Able Body Labor 200 at Phoenix International Raceway. The penultimate race starts at 4:30 p.m. EST with live coverage provided by ESPN2 beginning with its pre-race show at 4 p.m.
