NASCAR Nationwide Series Race 34 of 35 – Phoenix International Raceway
DESERT STORM : For Bakersfield, California native Kevin Harvick, Phoenix International Raceway (PIR) has proven to be one of his most successful tracks on the NASCAR circuit. This weekend he will be behind the wheel of the No. 33 Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) Rheem “Sun Runner” Chevrolet to make his 15th career Nationwide Series start at the one-mile track. In 14 previous starts at the track, Harvick has recorded one win, 10 top-five and 11 top-10 finishes. His average starting position is 9.9 with an avaerage finish of 8.5.
In addition to his success in the Nationwide Series, Harvick has won in both the Truck and Cup Series at PIR. He has 13 starts in the Cup Series with two wins, three top-five and six top-10 finishes. In the Truck Series, he has recorded three wins (all for KHI) in nine starts, with four top-five and four fop-10 finishes.
ELITE GROUP: Harvick became the first driver at PIR to win a race in all three of NASCAR’s elite series by scoring his first Truck Series win in 2002, followed by a sweep in 2006 of the Nationwide and Cup Series events. Kyle Busch has also completed this task at PIR. Harvick is one of only 19 drivers to accomplish this feat of winning in all three of NASCAR’s top Series at the same track.
SUN RUNNER: Rheem Manufacturing Company will introduce an exciting new paint scheme dubbed “Sun Runner” this weekend at PIR to heighten public awareness of the significant energy and cost saving benefits of its solar water heater systems.
Rheem Solar water heaters capture thermal energy in rooftop collectors that look much like skylights and convert about 70 percent of the sun’s heat into useable energy. Sunlight is collected and converted to heat energy and is transferred from the solar collector to water in a storage tank, where it is stored until needed. By installing a Rheem SolPak water heating system, owners achieve significant water and energy savings. It’s estimated that switching from conventional electric or propane water heating systems will save homeowners between $250 and $550 annually on water heating bills alone. Additionally, an individual solar water heating system saves more than 3,000 pounds CO2 offset annually.
Rheem is also sponsoring a consumer contest in collaboration with KMLE-FM, a CBS radio affiliate in Phoenix, called “Race for a Greener Planet” to promote the use of energy efficient home appliances such as heating, cooling and water heating systems. The contest runs concurrently with the Greenbuild International Conference and Exposition at which Rheem is an exhibitor. One lucky fan who enters the contest through the KMLE-FM radio promotion in the PIR midway area will win a Rheem Solar System with installation.
BEFORE THE RACE: QUOTES WITH DRIVER KEVIN HARVICK: Does Phoenix fall into the same category as a short track like Martinsville or Richmond? “I don’t really see Phoenix as a short track. Even though places like Phoenix and New Hampshire are only a mile, they both have a lot of room to race. Phoenix is always a fun race track. There are always at least two lanes, and sometimes even more, to pass.”
What makes Phoenix International Raceway a good track for you?: “Phoenix is a place for me that’s a lot of fun just because it’s a place where I grew up racing and the track hasn’t changed a whole lot. Obviously the surroundings have changed a little bit on the outside, but it’s a place that I enjoy going to. I enjoy the flat tracks and it creates a unique challenge because the asphalt’s worn out and it’s got a lot of cracks and crevices. It’s one of those places where you have to get your car to handle a little bit differently on each end and you have to drive a little different on each end. You have to get your car to handle and have good forward bite up off the corner.
What is your favorite memory from Phoenix? “A lot of things have happened at Phoenix. We have been fortunate to win in all three divisions. I ran one of my first truck races there in a truck that we built ourselves and was fortunate to win. I grew up racing at Phoenix. That was kind of like our Daytona every year for the Southwest Tour and Winston West. It is a good place to race and always a lot of fun to go back and see friends and families you don’t see a lot. There are just a lot of memories on the track and off the track. I don’t know if I can narrow it down to just one.”
FINAL TWO: Kevin Harvick will make his last start of the 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series season this weekend when he climbs in the driver’s seat of the No. 33 “Sun Runner” Rheem Chevrolet at Phoenix International Raceway. Ryan Newman will close out the season at Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway.
CHASSIS HISTORY: This weekend the No. 33 KHI Rheem team will unload chassis No. 051 at Phoenix International Raceway for KHI co-owner Harvick. This is a brand-new chassis to the KHI stables and this will mark its race debut.
PREVIOUS RACE RECAP: Team co-owner Kevin Harvick was last behind the wheel of the No. 33 KHI Chevy at Texas Motor Speedway where he was looking for his fifth win in the Nationwide Series at the track. Starting the race from the fifth position, Harvick was able to make his way to the lead and run in the top five for most of the race. A hiccup on pit road late in the race shuffled Harvick back in traffic, but with a fast car, he was able to make his way back through the field to finish the race in the sixth position. The finish marked his eighth top-10 finish at the track in 11 starts and his 15th top-10 finish this season in 21 starts.
