When I look at something I try and think of multiple sides to the story.  In this case you seem to be only thinking about the teams.  These sponsors are expecting X when they sign on the line.  If they end up with Y, they have a right to be upset.  While I do, in theory, agree that it seems petty for Nextel and Sonoco to make the beef they have, they do have a point.  If they are told they will be the only (insert product here) for such and such a price, they should expect that to be the case.  What is the point in an "exclusive" if it isn't exclusive?

NASCAR started this problem, not the sponsors or the teams.  NASCAR knows they will have 43 cars willing to make the field every single week.  What do they care if a single team sponsor is upset?  After all, the "official" sponsors are the ones paying NASCAR's bills, not the team sponsors.  I think it sucks, but don't be mad at the sponsors.  Be mad at the France family.

Slippery slope for sure.  I think it should be free market and Nascar should just stop giving exclusives.

Is There ANYbody out there?

« Reply #4 on: March 23, 2007, 03:55:38 PM »

Yeah!

Why not sell the same piece of real estate as many times and as many ways as possible? Then, when the pool of team sponsors dries up, the fans can watch the "Official Sponsors" duke it out.

I see Court TV gaining viewers in the near future. Wouldn't it be a hoot to see The Brian sweating and squirming in the camera lens?

Since none of us have seen anything official other than Nascars or Sunoco's version...we will never Know exactly. I mean we have not seen any sign affidavit or contract ? Just speculations . As far as Shell Gas or At&T vs Cellular One or Motorola...Hell Nascar should not give exclusive rights other than an endorsement that for the life of the Contract that Sponsor is the Preferred Product of Nascar. If other Competition wishs to Sponsor a Car  , so be it . But the Cell Phones for Nascar Related Business or Gasoline in the Competition Cars and support vehicles is Sunoco...and so on. Other than that keep their pety little arrogent mouths shut...take about wanting your cake and eat it too .  Competition is what makes the world prosper...anything else..is unfair trading practice's. I agree with Jeff's Article !  Wink ][/b]

Just for the fun of it, I'll play devil's advocate.

Nextel and Sunoco have dished out huge sums of money to the Beach Boys.  You have to assume that they did so after being assured that, in exchange for all that dough, they were promised certain things.  Such as, "If you give us the GDP of a small European nation, we'll let you be the EXCLUSIVE cell phone, gasoline, etc of NA$CAR."  I think the bad guy here is the usual gang of suspects.

All this sponsorship whining is just crap...How about they just pony up the money and not be the official anything.  Or better yet...just quit whining.  But I guess bad press is better than no press at all.

THANKS for posting the list Skool
This is just the thing I was getting at on another thread... If you look at ALL the long list of "Official" whatevers,... you can see it covers a VERY wide range of products or services.
NOW lets say we got this whole deal with Nextel, and Sunoco going on.... What if they excluded EVERY sponsor from EVERY group that competed with all the "official" sponsors
You can see,.. from what I was saying,.. even the list of "possible" sponsors would SOON run out.  Current companies get bought out, new businesses start up and become Fortune 500 (or 100) companies, etc.
THATS the kinda of money that it takes to keep this sport going.

ANother thing... All this NASCAR says AT&T can't come in and sponsor a car.... but NASCAR can take money from SAMSUNG to sponsor a race. Go figure.  Rules would seem to be rules.  Whats good for teams should be good for NASCAR.  NASCAR sets the example (much like the liquor deal)  They are more than HAPPY to take money from a competing company with Nextel to put in THEIR pockets,.. but heaven forbid a team be allowed to get a few sponsorship dollars from some company competing with NEXTEL..... go figure
This smack of the same as the LIQUOR deal that happened at DIS.  NASCAR took money from Royal Crown to have sponsorship at the speedway, but told race teams THEY could not have a LIQUOR sponsor. Well look what happened there.  We now have liquor sponsors.
I think this would be a GREAT argument for AT&T if they do their homework. It just shows an ongoing act.
