Damm this is the second time i find myself defending  MW  tonight, Tryyus  reading your post i see u state that MW was 3 seconds off the pace. so i went back and looked, u are correct that he was off the pole pace by 2.81 seconds , but his speed was 123.859  which  ws 32 quickest out of 50 cars.   Maybe the problem is the qualifieing format and not the Toyota drivers.  just a thought    Go jeff

Lets remember this was an Impound race, alot of cars were set in race trim not qualifying trim, since they didnt need to qualify to race.
So if the rules we're different anyone needing to qualify to race would have been in qualifying trim.

It's hard to compare Apples to Oranges, especially on an impound race.

well...
lets see here.  I'm not gonna "guess" the year.
I know the circumstances were the CAT car, and some other major sponsor missed the field at the Fall race at Atlanta.
NASCAR had their knee jerk reaction to go to this top 35 lock in starting the next year at Daytona.... so thats the time line.

Before that if I'm not mistake I think they took the top 38 (I'm guessing ther but it's pretty close) on speed... and the they filled the last 5 spots based on points.
Starting from the top of the points and working down... who ever didn't make the field got one of the last spots.  One spot was saved for a champions provisional if need be.  When those spots were taken everyone else went home.

That's the one. The one where they took the top 38 on speed.

yeah... and people still had the SAME complaint about THAT qualifying procedure...
Some "faster" cars got bumped out and sent home and slower cars made the field... just depended where you stood in the points.
Some had rumbled (a little) they should work it different... leaning more toward top 43 in speed
I guess you don't ever get NASCAR thinking about changing anything... they'll screw it up for sure/
