"Free the 8"

Do all these screaming people on SPEED's show who want to "Free the 8" understand that, while NASCAR might ask or even compel DEI to give the number 8 to HMS for Junior, or, that even if Theresa were to just give it up, DEI owns the trademark for the shape and colors as the "8" logo is currently seen on the Bud car and will likely not give up that trademarked design?

I heard someone on TV saying they didn't want to buy all new "stuff"--so he wanted to Free the 8. Of course, he will still have to buy new stuff, because the "8"--if it is freed--would have to look different than its current design. (in fact, DEI also owns the design of Ralph's old "8" as well.)

Get him the number 80, or 08.
Then he can be all that he wants to be.
Maybe even go down in history with a new number, --- along side the numbers 3 & 8. Make another number famous that's associated with HIM.
The number 3 is Dale Earnhardt's OLD number, --- and the number 8 is his grandfather, Ralph's OLD number. That's the way it's ALWAYS gonna be.

8, 3, 5 lol all this speculation!!!! I applaud Jr for moving on! Whatever number he ends up with I am sure he will be fine with it and so will his fans some might take longer than others to come around......Golly Gee all my Junny memorabillia is gonna shoot up in value Cheers peeps

UPDATE 2:There is nothing keeping Hendrick Motorsports from buying the #8 from Dale Earnhardt Inc. as long as NASCAR approves the transfer of the number. While NASCAR owns all numbers and issues them to organizations on an annual basis, teams sell numbers all the time. NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said it is unlikely the governing body would prevent such a transfer, adding the financial terms are not a concern.(ESPN.com)(7-2-2007)
