Scranton Makes it Two in a Row at Putnam County Speedway!!
6-30-07
Taking the feature win last week, Mike Scranton was once again on a roll Saturday night in the hobby stock feature. After a caution for a five car tangle in turn 1, Scranton took the lead over Randy Moody before David Miller Jr. snagged Moody’s position and set off after Scranton. Tim Dowling, who returned to the speedway from a two week suspension, moved up to challenge Moody, snagging Moody’s position on lap 5. Moody rallied to put his lucky #13 ride back in 3rd on lap 13, but his luck didn’t hold out. Bruce Birkett and Ron Frank dueled for position with Birkett winning that battle. After a late race caution that tightened the field back up, Miller who normally pulls out all the stops late in the race didn’t disappoint as he challenged Scranton hard. Scranton held on to take the checkered over Miller, Birkett, Frank, and Dowling.
Modifieds and Late Models ran a feature race together for the first time this season. Jason Lowe took the lead with Mike Tripp in 2nd. Lowe gained ground over the field as Kevin Mills and Kyle Owen took the 3rd and 4th position. Tripp began closing the gap between Lowe and himself before Lowe once again gained distance over the field. Mills overcame Tripp on lap 14 and began honing in on Lowe. Lowe fended off Mills’ challenges and took the checkered over Mills, Kyle Owen, Tripp, and Eddie Rosier.
Chad Scranton notched another win to his belt in the Pure Stock division. Scranton and Tim Gigon lined up side by side with Scranton taking the lead at the green flag drop. Gigon held on to his position as Jody Wells closed in on Gigon. Wells gave Gigon a run, snagging the 2nd position before Wells’ luck ran out on lap 8. Dustyn Tyre moved up into 3rd and worked Gigon in an attempt to snag 2nd. Gigon held on as Scranton took the checkered with Gigon, Tyre, Stewart Krebs, and Jimmy Dowling rounding out the top 5.
Art Souther finally snapped his streak of bad luck in the Mini Stock division as he led the field wire to wire. David Hamm overcame Brack Gill for 2nd before the two tangled, placing Hamm in the infield to watch the remainder of the race. Joey Froehlich moved from the rear of the lineup to take 2nd behind Souther until Froehlich spun out in turn 2, handing 2nd to Jay Farris. After a caution for Jamie Farris, who hit the backstretch retaining wall, Dalton Strehle moved into 2nd. Souther remained clear of the battles to take the checkered over Strehle, Froehlich, Jay Farris, and Gill.
Quad racing returned to the speedway as 9 four-wheelers hit the ground running. Justin Young dove low into turn 2 and rolled his four-wheeler bringing out the red flag. After officials checked Young over, the plucky youngster climbed back on his ride and rejoined the field to cheers from the grandstands. Daniel Turcotte took a lead he would not relinquish and Young worked back through the field to pass Scott Westney for 2nd Turcotte, Young and Westney took the top three positions at the checkered flag.
After a three way battle for the lead in Box Stocks, Johnny Warren led the field for a wire to wire win. Dustin Childers held on to 2nd before Shawn Pawlak snagged it from him on lap 8. Casey Feaster placed heat on Pawlak and took 2nd on lap 11. Warren led Feaster, Pawlak, Childers, and Ken DeVane to victory lane.
Kevin Mills, Ricky Land, Martin Johnson and Marc Kinley waged a four way battle for the lead in the Street Stock division with Mills taking the lead on lap 2. Kinley overcame Land for 2nd only to find himself in an incident with Joe Willis, who hit the turn 2 wall. After an incident between Mills and Land placed both at the rear of the lead lap, Tim Dowling and Martin Johnson took the 1st and 2nd position with Johnson challenging Dowling. Richard Adams and Jacky Bennett dueled for 3rd and 4th until Bennett found himself in the inside retaining wall of the backstretch. Dowling took the win over Johnson, Adams, Mills, and Kinley.
Racing resumes next Saturday with Clay County Citizen’s Night. Clay County citizens pay $5 for grandstand admission. All divisions will be running with a Backwards Spectator Race on the card. For more information, contact the speedway at 386-649-5372, or visit the website at
