[RESOLVED] Change in Avatar permissions?
«

Has there been a change to the forum's avatar permissions or settings?
I've tried uploading, pointing to a file on alternate servers, changing avatars dimensions and size, and nothing works.
I had to select "no avatar" just to erase the one that was up on my profile. I've made sure the new avatar was smaller in size than previous ones I've used, and smaller than ones currently in use by others.

There haven't been any changes. Have you tried to upload an avatar since you removed your other one? Maybe there was a conflict with it not being removed first. Give it a try and let me know what you find out. If I need to, I'll take a closer look at the settings for it.

Initially, I just tried uploading the new one. My old one (the santa) would just keep staying up there and I'd get the following error:
Quote
An Error Has Occurred!
Your attachment couldn't be saved. This might happen because it took too long to upload or the file is bigger than the server will allow.
Please consult your server administrator for more information.
I then tried pointing to another URL for the avatar to host on. Same problem.
I then checked dimensions and file size, and it's the same pixel size, and smaller in file size than avatars I've previously used before.
I then went up to the top there and selected the "no avatar" in order to ditch the santa avatar. Then retried all the methods for adding new one. The only thing that works is adding personal text, thus the "Image Avatar Here." So that feature works.

gimme a couple days to look into it, and I'll see what I can do. I'll be heading out for work soon, so I don't know if I'll get a chance to look right away.

No worries.
You can help by letting me know if there are dimension and file size restrictions set so that I know I'm working within those restrictions. Also, it looks like .jpg and .gif are acceptable formats to use. Those should only apply to uploads, unless there's also a setting to limit size even for off site hosted images. The largest avatar I've used on this forum was my Steven Wallace blinking one. It was 125x107 pixels and 20.4 KB in size.

KBF, did you have a chance to look into this any further?
I tried it again today from my work computer just in case the issue was on the upload on my end. Same result.
Are there upload quotas / limits assigned per forum member? For example, a member can only upload a certain total amount of file space?
Or maybe there's an Member Avatar Upload folder that has a max setting on it and it's full?
I'm just guessing here. But really, none of it should matter as it won't allow pointing to a self hosted image either.
Makes me think it's a permissions issue; perhaps after a forum software update.

No upload quotas, no limit on upload folder, no software update, and permissions all look good. I asked on the smf forum, and no one has been able to suggest anything. I've also search through the smf forums and the help text with no success. I emailed Ren and asked him to take a look at it. I'll keep bugging him until we get this solved because I am now in the same boat as you.
Other members, don't make any attempts to change your avatar for now because it looks like you might end up stuck without one until this gets resolved.

I've been working on this for a couple of hours tonight, and I haven't been able to figure out why this isn't working. The only avatars that currently can be used are the ones that are already setup and the preloaded avatars. I'll keep researching the problem.

Well, my gut feeling is that the software went through an update from SMF in the background. That, or it's related to the recent FS down time.
I will say that this evening I noticed the times on posts were off. I'm Eastern time, and at 11:14 pm it was showing all new posts that have been made since my last login (today, at work around 4:30pm) as being "Yesterday". In other words, my Time Offset had been reset or something. I did the auto detect and it's back to normal now.
So, it's more than just an avatar linking or upload issue..... that or the eggnog was spiked!
Thanks for looking at it, and poppin in with an update Ren.

Does the words Woo and Hoo mean anything to you?
Looks like you should be able to get that avatar uploaded now. When we changed servers, the path for the directories changed. I didn't realize that though since I didn't do the actual move.

You da man, Ren!
Sunkist,
If you don't put up an avatar soon, .......................................
well,
let's just say I have a vivid imagination.
Imagine what I'm imagining when you suggest we "Imagine Avatar Here".
See what I mean?

Woo Hoo is right!
Great job by a great American. Ren, you're my Hero.
In your honor, I've updated my avatar and personal text to pay homage to you.
You've brought joy back to KBF and my forum experience. In addition, by reinstating our custom avatar posting privileges we're preventing Hudson Hornet's imagination from running amuck.
You very well may be, the Greatest American Hero!

Thanks a bunch Ren! That was definitely a problem that I wasn't able to fix on my own.
