I don't know if any of you guys have heard of him but he is a racehorse who won the Kentucky Derby this year but in the Preakness he got hurt. Well he had surgery and was doing really well till this week. Here is the article along with some pics of him now and before he was hurt.

http://sports.yahoo.com/rah/news;_ylt=AvaOUDiQDOJmbWppeb6xBWwX47kF?slug=ap-barbaro&prov=ap&type=lgns

He has a tough road now but my god he has come so far. My thoughts and prayers are with his owners and everyone who is involved with him.

He'll make some great elmers glue.. I bet it dries fast....  <---now that was tacky ehh??

What sucks is that he may of been the greatest race horse of all time and never had the chance to prove it. I still feel that when he broke through the gates before the "bell", he pulled or strained something then and when he took off for the race, he further injured it..

Good news...for now.  I heard on the news today that Barbaro is doing MUCH better today.  He's still got a long way to go, but his vet is much more hopeful today than he was yesterday. Smiley

Yeah,.. I feel for the horse... I think he is in sad shape.
Like someone said "He's a fighter"

Not so sure I feel so bad for the owner however...  Sad
I had a good friend that was a horse breeder here in the area.
Barbaro has now lived long enough that the owner has got a LOT of his sperm stored and saved, and can get MILLIONS for 'stud fees' whether he lives or dies.
To be a 'pesimest' could be he might rather the horse die,.. then he can collect the insurance on his "derby winner",.. and ALSO collect his high dollar stud fees.... getting the best of both worlds.

Horse racing and stud fees is a high dollar business,.. and it's all about the almighty dollar when you do it for a 'business'.  It's unfortunate, but the business people look at it that way...  very sad. Cry

I can tell you one thing his owners are not like many of the race horse owners out there. They visit that horse 2 times every day and have put so much money into him to make sure he lives. Barbaro is lucky to have owners that are going to spend as much money as they need to to keep him alive and happy.

Been awhile but Barbaro has started to go outside and graze for 15-20 min every day now.  Not out of the woods yet but his hoof is re growing and he is in good spirits.

That's a fact Ros! If folks were aware of how many horses are broken down as a result of their training and running schedule it would make ya cry.

Chris is correct, horse racing is a business, and the business is about making money. A profit.
Although horse racing, unlike NA$CAR, is still considered a sport, not yet having reached the status of "entertainment".

Race horses have been known to mysteriously die for no apparent reason. Many of those horses had/have multi-million dollar insurance policies on them. And there ARE those who see a buck as being more desirable than a 17 or 18 hands high horse. I'm thinking the money makes the loss a bunch easier to handle.

Stud service has always been an option when a race horse gets injured -- or just retires. However, now-a-daze the "stud" doesn't actually have to be there in person to get the deed done.
Bummers for the stud.
Why feed a stud when all ya gotta do is freeze what it takes to make babies for the next few years?

Some race horses are like Elvis, and/or Dale Earnhardt -- still make money -- even after death.

Has a LOT to do with the humongous amounts of moneeyto be maade in the so called" Sport Of Kings"

A lot of horses are doped up with all kinds of drugs to enable them to run, even if they are physically unable to.... Bute...Cort..... the list is sndless... I was suing some of the same drugs earlier in my life to enable me to walk after a crippling knee injury when i was a kid...They did so much damage, i stopped using the shots...still payin the price all these years later....

My ex-mom in law had two former  thoroughbred race horses she saved after they were all used up...they were in pretty sorry condition when she first got them, but after months of TLC they did pretty well! That's how I learned a bit about what goes on behind the scenes in this so called sport...

Racing cars is fine, animal is a big NO-NO in my book.

My last neighbor was an ex-race horse. His name was Slick. Boy what a personality he had. I never found out his history except he at one time was a race horse. He seemed to be in good health and loved the attention we'd give him.

I've known folks who have rescued race horses after they've been winded or otherwise broken down, and sometimes a horse just doesn't have that competitive personality and doesn't make the grade. Some make fine saddle horses -- sometimes jumpers.

But not all race horses have the kind of disposition most folks would want. Some can be ornery, and some are downright mean.
I knew of one that would take a hunk out of anyone's shoulder who wasn't paying attention. Don't turn your back near the stall door on that one! Several grooms and stable hands carry a scar as a reminder of just how mean he is/was.

Anyone who is bitten by that horse gets reminders too. 1. Pain. 2. A scar 3. If anyone is thinking of whacking the sucker right betwixt the eyes with the closest heavy object, a reminder that the horse is worth more than they are.
And they're serious.
Maybe even correct.
