We fed them silage (corn) and hay. Probably called silage because the feed was stored in the silo.
Different areas, different terminology, I expect.

You got BB! Buddy of mine has aa 300 or so head dairy herd and the corn for silage is chopped when it is still green and all ground up with other ingredients and stored in the silo.
Yep! A girl that knows her way around the farm! I am in love!

Silage -- that's the term my mother always used. She was raised on a farm in upstate New York.
Although I was raised in the city, I spent most of my time on the outskirts of town at
horse stables, usually not far from dairies. They called it fodder.
As I'm sure you've noticed -- if you can even find
a dairy -- there aren't too many silos on the left coast. Just bales and bales of alfalfa hay.
After driving Big trucks all across the fruited plain, I was able to see the differences in other
parts of the country. When the corn was harvested, and only stubbles remained, I recall
how the hogs were turned loose to gnaw what was left. Quite a tease for a pork chop
lover.

Ahhh.....we wondered what the substance was we found in stomachs of the cows we mutil...........autops.......umm found on the road hit by your automobiles.
Very interesting

HH , the corn pickers they use now don't leave anything in the field. We used to be able to pick up enough ears of corn for BatGrannie to feed the squirrles all winter. Now you are lucky if you fine one ear. Waste not want not I guess, but I'd hate to be a late migrating goose, depending on something left in the field to munch on.
Feed the gooses!!
( Yes it is. It's a SKINNY goose!!.)
