well I read the article... I can see maybe some validity to it.
ON the other hand,... I don't know if the TV coverage showed us the whole story.

I mean lets look at it another way.  When the video picked up the coverage it was RIGHT before they entered the corner, and Newman was right on Tonys LR corner... then he hit him
Now we know Newman had fresh tires, and would be faster than Stewart.... SO common sense would tell you he would have been a several car lengths behind Stewart going into the previous corner,.. and was running him down pretty fast (since Stewart was on old tires)

Now here's where I think maybe the article is a bit off kilter.
If you look at the replays closely,.. looks to my like Tony HELD his line threw the corner.  NEWMAN was the one that overdrove the entrance into the corner,.. kinda looks like HIS car slid up and into the LR of Stewarts car.  Didn't look like to me like Stewart cut down in front of newman, did any type of blocking manuver or anything of the sort to try and keep Newman back.
Looked like Newman had the whole INSIDE lane to himself,.. all he had to do was keep his car under control and NOT run into Tony.... which is what looked like what happened to me.

I'm not a Stewart Fan,... but I just thought that was my opinion of what I saw.  I can't fault Stewart for what happened,... any more than I can fault Newman for Waltrip punting HIM on the restart a couple laps later.

I'm with you Chris...Newman should have showed more common sense, backed off until they got through the corner, and THEN passed stewart. It's obvious to me...sure maybe Tony held his line to pinch Newman down so he COULDN'T get the run and get by him in the corner, figuring Newman would have to back out and wait to try on the next straight, and that's a very viable, oft-used strategy in places like NH where getting around the corner fast often involves going to the outside of the track on entrance in order to be down on the bottem at the apex...Tony was there, so Newman really didn't have the option to do that. So he SHOULD have let up...instead, he kept pushing, and pushed right into Tony, THE LEADER, being spun out... Roll Eyes

I agree with both you guys. Anyone who actually thinks Tony was in the wrong is the stupid one. All Tony did was give Ryan the inside and hold his line. It was Ryan who was the one who over drove the corner and lost it. what was Tony supposed to do? Just stop before entering the corner to allow Ryan to pass. Tony gave Ryan the inside to pass and Ryan just screwed up. Simple as that.

The crash happened right below where I was sitting in the grandstand.  IMO, Tony held his line as best he could through the corner.  Ryan was faster on new tires and could ahve easily passed him down the frontstretch.  Whether he closed on the 20 faster then he thought or whether he was just being careless, I can'r say, but the 12 dumped the 20.

But see that's what Jeff does best....and that's why I like reading his columns.  They usually share a different point of view and he's not worried about being p.c. Smiley

Ya think! Shocked Grin

I just had a long conversation with him and he is just tickled pink! While he assured me that he is in no way a Tony hater, but is in fact a Tony fan, (not his favorite, but a fan) he said he just wishes everyone would accept the article for what it is. A statement of fact (with some opinion thrown in for taste!)

Tony simply chose to fight the wrong battle at the wrong time. We all do dumb or stupid things once in awhile. Why, Jeff himself said that he has done some arguably stupid things (evidence of which can be found in the Benton Co. Sheriff's archives, among other institutions across the country) that seemed, at the time, the right thing to do! (He was quick to add that all such evidence were labled as 'simple misdemeanors', since the age of 18 anyway...)

Live and learn as they say! Roll Eyes Wink
