FS Amy just brought up a point on one of the other threads. When it comes to cheating why is it always Chad Knaus that's the first to get thrown under the bus?

So let's say you.

If you're going on the number of times caught, I believe Berrier has Knaus by 1.

Just one note-the shock to which you refer was NOT illegal.  It was made illegal after two HMS teams used it at Dover, but at the time the 48 won the race, the shock was 100% legal.

Amy your absolutely correct. But I believe I've framed it correctly. Chad Knaus re-arranged all legal parts in a shock there by not violating a nascar rule however the arrangement prevented the shock from working as designed.

I just threw them up there in any ol' order.

I clicked Junior Johnson. Seeing his name reminds me it's cold enough for some 'shine. I've got an autographed bottle of his "Midnight Moon" collecting dust.

Yeah.. Smokey was before my time also... but MAN there are some great stories about him... LOL

I remember going to the first "Winston"... DW won going away that day.  Just as he crossed the S/F line he kicked in the clutch and revved the motor until she blew.  That motor HAD to be illegal.  The owner (seems it was Jr Johnson said something to the effect,... "yeah they can tech the motor.... gonna be hard to tech all them pieces tho"

I think MOST try to cheat to some extent... some more than others.  Several are better at 'hiding' it than others... and some are just to worried about getting caught to try to cheat.
Hell when we raced the CTS... we never cheated... not one time.  Of course it was ALL we could do to get the truck ready, have our ducks in a row, get to practice, and all that stuff.  We had so much to do just BEING there,.. we never had TIME to sit down and "figure out" a way to cheat.  Maybe thats why we missed so many shows... They did and we didn't..   Huh?   Huh?

Chris nailed it, not having Smokey on this list is like leaving The King off a greatest drivers list. To him, rules were merely obstacles to find a way around.

Speaking of Richard Petty, don't even think all those wins were in legal cars...

Cheating is as much a part of NASCAR racing as the "bump and run" is.

the biggest cheater in NASCAR history; smoky yunick. But back in the day they were called "racing secrets", and another modern term would be called ...'innovation'

the fun part to carrying on is not to get carried off.

Smokey Yunick is a classic. They confiscated his fuel tank at Daytona. He had such a long fuel line in the car that he was still able to drive the car the five miles back to his shop with just the fuel that was sitting in the fuel line. After that NA$CAR instituted a maximum length for fuel lines.

I love the fuel line story and I also love the one about the 3/4 or 7/8 or whatever scale car...NASCAR couldn't figure out WHAT was wrong with it...it LOOKED just like the floor model.  They ahd to ahve someone go get a stock model to figure out what was wrong!
