Hunter blames the DRIVERS???

"This is a big, fast racetrack no doubt, but our drivers are professional race car drivers. There are limits to everything and it seems as though no matter what, our drivers will stretch those limits," said Jim Hunter, NASCAR Vice President of Communications. "Our crash investigators will analyze this crash to see if there's anything we can do to prevent something like this. We're always looking at ways to make racing safer. That's our No. 1 priority."

You have got to be kidding me!

that doesn't surprise me.  Anything to try and take the blame and limelight off from them they will do.

You can say all you want, but the bottom line is, racing is a dangerous sport. for the drivers and the fans.  The closer you get to the action, the greater the danger, everyone knows that!  Short of building a solid wall 20 feet high, is that what you what?  You pay you money to sit close to the danger zone, its part of the thrill, remember?
Go to a MLB game and sit behind the duggouts or first or third base.....watch out for line drive fouls with EVERY BATTER!  More chance of getting hurt there that at a race.

the fence did its job! end of story.

Well in Hockey , Fans were protected from flying Debris ( Broken sticks , deflected Pucks) by Glass surrounding the playing surface. Until someone actually got killed by a deflected shot flying high over the glass and into the crowd the current practice of a netting above the the end glass was initiated. I think all the tether cables attached to the wheel assemblies hoods and decks etc. have significantly reduced airborne projectiles from entering beyond the current Nascar Fencing , but the actual potential of the car entering the stands or parts of the car or damaged fencing causing injury should still be further improved. Perhaps some day the lowering of speeds via something other than
restrict-or plated  vehicles will be utilized....until then keep you heads up or perhaps down.  Huh?

The race itself was by far the best of the season as it normally is. Very competitive. I hate watching this follow the leader crap we are given at almost every other track.
I am very sorry for the fans that are hurt and have spent my shre of time praying for them, but look at the facts. This track even with restrictor plates is no more dangerous than any other. In the fourty years of operation I can only think of one death (Tiny Lund) in the 70's. On three occasions cars have gotten into the fence (Bobby Allison, Neil Bonnett and Edwards). Each time the catch fence did its job and pushed the car away from the stands. The only major injury to a driver that I recall was Kyle Petty broke his leg in the early 90's. All of the media talk I am hearing this week about changing the track configuration is nuts. It was a racing accident and that is all.
As far as "I will never got to Tdega", everybody has the right to spend thier money as they see fit. I know I first went in 1970 and have seen the majority of races run there. I also hold tickets to Bristol and Martinsville and think Tdega is the best racing of any track. I have never walked away saying it was a boring race.
And from what I heard Edwards say, he knew he wasn't clear. He was hoping the 09 would blink and either back off or go below the yellow line. That was a little miscalculation on his part.

David was one the first writers to ever help Jayski.com and myself back in 1997. No word on arrangements. Thoughts go out to David's family.(4-28-2009)

Perhaps 'Anonymous' already knew.

I laughed at that when I read it. And now DAMM! All thought I didn't agree with everything Poole said I enjoyed listening to him on my morning commute. And he knew he was fighting a weight challenge. Alot of the Sirius staff have weight issues.

Well my condolences go to his family and they people who worked with him day in and day out.

There has been suggestion (Heard it on Sirius) that, with attendance down at most race tracks, they might close the lower stands, to decrease the risk of injury to fans....hope they lower the price on the upper stand seats, then, because a lot more fans won't be able to afford to go to the races then.
