From what I've heard on Sirius the driver is not a big name but someone that most NASCAR fans will know.

ESPN says its someone not in tonights race.    Hmmm.   If that means they raced last weekend and are not this weekend, then its Mayfield or Speed.

Wow.   Mayfield is an idiot if this is true.

Mayfield is the one...such a shame really.  I'm interested in hearing his side of the story first.

If he raced on something that could have impaired his driving or judgement, I will never have an ounce of respect for him again.

Speed's in, he's driving the 87 for Nemechek...someone actually suggested because of that that it might be Front Row Joe!! Sadly, I'm surprised but not, about Jeremy...that's usually when it seems to happen, when your racing career has slid, and you're trying desperately to field your own car, but not really succeeding, because no-one will put you in their car. Sad.

Zero tolerance means he could have been hanging out with someone who smoked a joint the night before, and tested positive to marijuana...not saying that's what happened, but it is possible. We have women who test positive with no history of drug use, who state their partner smoked a joint...might be a lie but it is possible, if you inhale the smoke, you can test positive...

I have to think any driver or crewman (a la Kevin Grubb) who knew he was going to test positive, would do anything to avoid being tested....

That's why I would want to hear his side of the story before condemning him...

Per Jayski, Mayfield's response:

Mayfield Statement: Statement from Jeremy Mayfield – Owner/Driver of the #41 Toyota Camry: “As both a team owner and a driver in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, I have immense respect for the enforcement policies NASCAR has in place. In my case, I believe that the combination of a prescribed medicine and an over the counter medicine reacted together and resulted in a positive drug test. My Doctor and I are working with both Dr. Black and NASCAR to resolve this matter. Mayfield Motorsports remains committed to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and the organization will announce an interim owner and a temporary replacement driver early next week. Those roles will commence immediately beginning with next week’s Sprint Open and continuing through Charlotte and beyond.”(Mayfield Motorsports)(5-9-2009)

Now, I'll be the first to admit that I don't know everything about pharmacology, but I have never had a patient or heard of one test positive for something because of a combination of drugs. I'm curious what he was taking.

"Interim owner"...I guess that means if an owner tests positive, he's out, too...his teams won't be allowed, even if he is not behind the wheel...that's something that had not occured to me.
