Carl Edwards has been fined $20,000 and placed on probation for hitting Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s car on the cool-down lap following the Carfax 250 Busch Series at Michigan International Speedway, NASCAR officials announced today.
I think that's fair, considering the number of points he lost when Jr wrecked him...no need to take points.

What a joke………………$20,000 and more probation for endangering another driver - on purpose AND damaging another competitor's racecar - on purpose -- AND manhandling a winner in Victory Lane!!! But a curse word said in jubilation on national TV cost a Chase contender 25 points!!!!! Harvick gets parked; Spencer gets parked, but Nascar's "golly gee aw shucks guy" gets a slap on the wrist. HE'S ALREADY ON PROBATION - did they forget that?
So what - he's now on double probation?
? Once again, Nascar is the most inconsistent governing body in sports today -- shame on them. Nascar will never be fully recognized as a "true sport" along with baseball, football and basketball until Nascar's governing body sets the rules, and is consistent in punishing those who don't abide by them.[\quote]

UPDATE: Roush Racing announced today that Carl Edwards recognizes and accepts NASCAR's penalty and will not appeal. “I put everything I can into winning races,” stated Edwards. “I was wrecked and I reacted. It was wrong on my part. NASCAR penalized me and I respect that. Most importantly I apologize if I upset any of my fans or sponsors.”(Roush Racing PR)(8-22-2006).......................................
............... WELL I have to give Carl credit he at least is manning up to the fact he goofed up it takes a big man to admit he was wrong and except his penalty thumbs up to CARL

Uh... Double "secret" probation...
Seeing how this was the "Carfax 250" - it'd be interesting to see what the report is for Juniors car....
Now billy.... We are all well aware of the inconsistancy of NA$CAR's rulings... In fact - the only consistant thing NA$CAR has going on is their LACK of consistancy...
NA$CAR doesn't ask what rule was broken - they ask who broke it too....

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY . . .
When I go to casinos, the most ridiculous sign I see is the one that says:
"If you have a gambling problem, call 1-800-GAMBLER."
So, I call them and say,
"I have an ace and a six. The dealer has a seven. What do I do?"

Considering Carl was never put on probation in the first place, for the Tony incident....look it up, nowhere is it mentioned Carl being put on probation, only Despain seems to think that he was, and has announced it on 2 different TV shows now...had they added probation to the penaltly, it would have been announced and recorded somewhere...Carl wasn't on probation for a first offense. AND that incident was in a different series than this one.
And Jr won't get anything...it was a one-off race, he's not running for a championship, so taking points for aggressive driving won't hurt him, and a fine??? Yeah, THAT'LL get his attention...

SEE!
Finally, someone clears that up...Despain was mis-informed, and continued to be mis-informed through 2 major NASCAR/racing TV shows...he started that whole Probation rumor...

Edwards wasn't put on probation after Pocono
On Thursday, I talked with Joe Balash, the competition director for the Busch Series, and he said that Carl Edwards was not on any NASCAR probation.
There can actually be two kinds of probation. You can be on probation in your own series — for example Cup, Busch or Truck. The other kind is NASCAR probation, which basically means you had better not mess up in any series. If you are under NASCAR probation, it doesn't matter in which series you had the first problem.
When it's all said and done, Edwards received a one-lap penalty for rough driving in the Nextel Cup race at Pocono. He served the penalty and went on his way. Now, after getting into the side of Dale Earnhardt Jr. at Michigan, Edwards was fined $20,000, and he's on NASCAR probation. Even though the incident with Earnhardt happened in the Busch Series, if he has a problem in a Craftsman Truck race or a Nextel Cup race between now and December 31, the penalty could get pretty serious.
Balash looked back and found no history of NASCAR taking away points for a post-checkered flag incident in which one driver ran his car into another car. After the Nextel Cup road-course race at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. two years ago, NASCAR docked Tony Stewart and his car owner Joe Gibbs 25 points apiece for a post-race altercation with Brian Vickers. But as far as banging into each other with race cars, he found no history where NASCAR had taken away points.
Thanks Larry Mac!!!

O.o
Is it bad that's the most surprising thing to me about this whole deal... the fact that after what he did at Pocono, he wasn't put on probation? But then, I just have a real problem with any intention wrecking, and a *massive* problem with doing it on pit road, so that's prolly just me.
Not that it matters if he was or wasn't on probation. Probation is just NASCAR's way of pretending they're doing something without actually having to. Heck, you could probably rack up three or four before they'd bat an eyelash.
Unless they don't like you of course.

Kyle Busch throws a HANs device and gets a 25 point penalty. Carl slaps Jr with his car and no points. Go figure.
