Not sure how many folks follow Jayski in the off season.. but it has some good info (and rumors)
This was posted today..... VERY interesting.

NASCAR may scrap points system? NASCAR is considering scrapping the points system it has used since 1975 in favor of a simpler method that awards points per finishing position. The overhauling of the system is one of a handful of changes NASCAR is considering implementing before the season begins next month. Series officials have been detailing their ideas in individual meetings with teams. The sanctioning body wants to go to a scoring system that would award 43 points to the race winner, and one point less for each ensuing position down to one point for the 43rd-place finisher. NASCAR is also shying away from wholesale changes to its Chase for the Sprint Cup championship format. Teams have been told NASCAR is leaning toward keeping it a 12-driver field, with one caveat: The top 10 drivers following the 26th race of the season would qualify for the Chase, while the remaining two spots would go to the drivers with the most wins who are not already eligible for the Chase. Preseason testing begins Thursday at Daytona International Speedway, and NASCAR president Mike Helton and vice president of competition Robin Pemberton are scheduled to discuss some of the changes planned for 2011. But the major announcements aren't scheduled until next week when France makes a presentation during Charlotte Motor Speedway's annual media tour. NASCAR is still debating how to award bonuses under a straight points system, and ideas being considered are for anywhere from one to three points being given to lap leaders and race winners.

Heck just do the straight points system. Why do they even need the dang bonuses??

That way the most consistant driver will win PERIOD! Sometimes simple is better IMHO

Not sure just what i think of the chnages to the chase but as far as Im concerned really they could just scrap the whole darn thing and the driver with the most points wins if points racing is here to stay.

I KNOW some say "well so and so had 7 wins so they should win because they had the most wins"  NOT if they had 7 DNF's as well IMHO they shouldnt. I guess THAT the straight point system and no bonuses would reflect that. Just go 43 pts for the winner and down to 1 for 43rd. That way if some guy runs great one week and DNF's the next and gets 40th it kinda evens out and makes him run harder to get those higher  points to make or keep up there if somehting goes wrong..

I hate that guys get points for the pole..for nothing really! It has NO bearing on how they will do in the race itself! Lead the most laps ,well whoopee..if you DNF with 25 to go does it really matter? You still finshed 36th or so.

I CAN see maybe a 3 point bonus for winning i guess. it WOULD be an incentive to win not just run 2 all the time and would create excitement that way. those 3 pts would really add up and be  needed for a bad finisih or 2 so they WILL be trying harder for those extra 3 pts. No OTHER pts though!! Who Cares? Its just not important where my driver starts OR thast he leads the most laps..its where he finshes!

Awww heck im  just thinking out loud I reckon....

WIN and be consistantly high and you will win the Cup! Oh...and just scrap the Chase..let em RUN!!

I'd have to say, I don't totally hate this idea.

I suspect if you crunch the numbers from the last few seasons, it wouldn't change the standings a whole lot... just simplify things.

Now, if we could just get rid of the dang Chase.  Wink

Oh, and don't even get me started on the Rookie of the Year award... could that be any more convoluted?

Steven Wallace has a ride for the Daytona 500.  And NASCAR thinks the points system is a pressing issue! I'm not sure it's in the top 10 of issues to be addressed.

well.. I can see that if Steven makes the field... it'll be as crashfest as long as Steven is on the track....
Boy just has very little (if any) talent IMO

Daddy said it's OK since the track was repaved and has lots of grip.  I say that means they'll be going a little faster when they wreck.

I think it would be a good idea, bit if, and ONLY if, they scrap the Chase at the same time.  The 43-point system is similar to the IRL system, and that championship is almost always exciting right down to the last race WITHOUT a Chase. A Chase with this system would be overkill.

Funny thing is...
What I see is they are more closely reverting back to some form of the OLD points system...
Instead of (more the most part) 3 points between each finish position... it would be only one point.
Thats what they said they wanted to get AWAY from... (Especially after Kenseth won the CHampionship on "consistency").. this system again would reward that
Also we see NASCAR wanting to go back to body styles that more resemble what the street versions actually LOOKS like.
Something ELSE they said they needed to COT for.. that way all the aerodynamics worked the same for everyone

This is like old times like some of us... we can remember when Detroit made street cars that would perform better on the race track.
Thus the birth of the Ford Thunderbird...  For many years we had lots of controversy over how NASCAR was trying to "help" Chevy teams to give them a leg up in the aero department....

To me it seems like NASCAR is reverting more to the way it WAS... in a way so they don't have to admit they screwed stuff up.

They act like the changes are "their new idea"  .
I am going to try and ignore all that this year and just watch the races.
It's getting harder to understand just what they want to make us think we see....if you understand that, You are as sick as I am. Grin

I Agree with BLU 43 points to the winner and -1 down to last and maybe give the winner 5 bonus points That might give guys like Mark Martin and Jeff Burton reason to Rattle another drivers cage for the win Smiley

ABSOLUTELY SMOKEN! You got what i was saying  exactly!

I personally think that THAt is the fairest and would bring the most competitve racing.

Only 1 point keeps everybody close and ONE bad finsh makes you hustle HARD next week!

Like i said FORGET all those ridiculous extra bonus pts. that have absolutely NOTHING to do with who wins . WHICH is what racings about isnt it? Winning? Go with 3-5 pts for the winner ONLY!

Doing it that way makes for ultra competitve racing and eliminates any and all need (there never was a need anyways) for the Chase. It also (by the added winner pts ) makes for  some really good raciing at the end to gain those valuable few pts youd get. Those few extra pts a few times  in the bank will help should you have a bad finish or two and be VERY VERY  valuable.

Think about that... WOW! Talk about exciting racing for a point or 2 more. It WOULD happen and hang on!

When that guy down by 10 pts or so says "I gotta get at least 5 more spots!", If a guy gets crashed in last weeks race he's gonna run his BUIT off to get at least some of those pts  back trust me! I need to win to get those 3-5 extra pts to get ahead or make up ground!! Yeah!...Theylll RUN!!

The whole  key is keeping it close enough pts wise (unlike now here we see big pts leads for guys that simply have bad race or 2, or thru no fault of their own get in a  crash and drop to 5th or lower in pts)  to let them know that  they CAN make em up! FUN!! FUN! FUN!

Regarding Kenseths Cup season. Consisitancy SHOULD be rewarded! Dang a guy has an avg finsih of 4th or 5th (I dont know what his avg was just saying a number) or so DESERVES to win it! Week in and week out consistancy like that is near impossible and if ANYONE can do that then they deserve it, wins or no wins.

Just MHO
