Frontstretch Poll for the Week of September 11 - Win For the Chase?
Poll
Question:
This year, both Mark Martin and Jeff Burton made the Chase for the Championship despite going winless over 26 starts. Should winning a race be a requirement of making the Chase? (Voting closed: September 18, 2006, 08:52:55 AM)

Sure, but only if too many DNFs disqualifies them. ;-)
Seriously though. I can understand wanting more points for wins. That's fair, even if it'll likely mean more wrecks out of the lead. But to accept that you MUST have a win to get into the chase would be to suggest that a driver who theoretically finishes second every single week is not good enough to run for the championship while someone who runs okay most of the time and gets lucky once could get in. It's to say not only that consistancy is not as good as winning - which I might agree with to a point - but that consistency and running well nearly every week is worth NOTHING. I think most anyone can see that's crap.

Very well said Duster,,...
In a way I'd
LOVE
to see Martin and Burton WIN the CUP Championship and
NOT
win a race this season.
Nascar has these ideas what they think are "Supposed" to happen,...
When Kenseth won the Championship by being consistent,.. they didn't like that,.. so they came up with this 'chase' crap...
We're here back in the
SAME BOAT
again with Martin and Burton.
Love to see it happen again...
Nascar thinks you HAVE to be a "winner" to be a Champion,... this would be a way to thumb their Noses at Nascar and "play their game by Nascars rules,.. and still come away with the championship"
Maybe it would wake some people up and make them realize the race don't always go to the swiftest,.. but to the smartest.
More likely Nascar would just change the rules again and give more and more points for
WINNING
until they got the results
THEY
wanted...
They would
NEVER
admit they were wrong... sad to say when the 'chase' becomes more important than the whole season.

Winning shouldn't be a requirement to get in the chase or be a champion BUT extra points should be awarded as a bonus for the winner. This would be a good combination of concistancy and winning.
I would also like to see a minimum points at around 35th place. This would eliminate the need to repair a car and get back in the race just to pick up a couple points. Also a consistantly running good car wouldn't loose so many points for a bad day. Loosing points are much easier than gaining them in Nascar.
