From someone that was there. He said something to the effect this isnt word for word. But nascar is saying that 10% of the fan base is now hispanic.  he said was he doubted NASCAR's stats, that 10% of NASCAR fans were Hispanics
He said the only time you would find 10% of the people at a track was maybe at Miami, and then they would be working.

My room mate actually heard what Ray Dunlap said WHEN he said it. And your're correct. Now, seeing as how it was a TAPED show, ---- how the HAIL did Ray's comment get out over the airwaves in the first place?

Apparently, at first, the insensitivity was shared by all involved. No gasps of horror were heard emitting from the politically correct collective mouths of the other announcers, guests, producer(s), taping crew, or even from the rowdy Tallagega fans in the audience while taping Tradin' Paint.

Well Plove, I think therin lies the problem.

Ever see an image in one of those curved mirrors that distort images? Ain't really a true "image", but it's an image none the less.

I think IF NA$CAR's heart was in the right place, there would be no need to worry about the image reflected or projected. I'm an old koot. And I've learned that the harder one tries to project an image --- the more reason to look closer.

WOW<.. SO WHAT...  you know he's probably right,..
I'm serious... he IS probably right.  I go to races (not like I used to) but we got a TON of Hispanics live here in the Atlanta area.  I doubt if 10% of the fans that are there are Hispanic. Not from what I see anyway.
And you have to remember,.. the "Tradin' Paint" show is SUPPOSED to be a show that is 'on the edge', controversial, etc.  Ray was playing right along with the shows 'script' of what has ALWAYS been done in the past.

And as far as the statement "then they would be the ones working."... Gotta give the guy credit.  THAT'S probably right also.  Concession stands, clean up during and after the race, etc.  Other than the souvenier trailers,.. you generally hire a "company" to do these things on race day,.. and they GENERALLY have a bunch of Hispanics working for them.
SO I think he's was probably saying all that tongue in cheek,.. but even if he was 100% serious,.. he could be right on the money.

All in all,.. IMO he was victimized by 'playing along' with the 'theme', and general tone of the show.  That's why it's CALLED Tradin Paint.  It's SUPPOSED to be controversial.
Guess thats why it wasn't on this week.. Afraid to be ANYTHING but Politically Correct now.

THAT about sums it up...I haven't heard it, but it's probably something that some guy in a garage somewhere might have thoughtlessly said one saturday afternoon, sometime...but because he said it on a radio program....same thing with Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth kidding and teasing on their radios to each other during the Busch race...and one calling the other "Ameriqueer"...in jest of course, and the fans that know these drivers know it was a joke, but saying something like that on a TV or radio show would be another thing....

Aww, poor guy. Fell victim to America at its questionably finest.

We are a country guilty of some heinous racial prejudice in the past, a prejudice which still in some cases is very real and hurts certain groups of people. But instead of taking THOSE instances and trying to fix them, we as a country have fallen victim to what we call in the newspaper biz "the appearance of partiality." Which is to say, even if we're speaking the utter truth, if it could be construed as being racist or sexist or whatever, we can't say it. And Americans are quicker than most to turn on the old shock-and-horror at these braches of "appearance of partiality." I'm thinking specifically of the ads for, I think it was Nintendo DS black and white, but I think it fits here too.

Too bad we can't stop harping on the appearance and just worry about the reality.
