Clint Boyer was called back into the pits during the Homestead Busch race by offiicials because he had a "loose" lug nut.

HuH?!

Just a race or two ago, a driver was called back into the pits by an official because he had only four lug nuts on. And the fifth lug nut was then installed --- hand tight!!
The announcers explained four lug nuts were actually enough so one lug nut loose is really no big thing.

Well, is it a big thing or not? Undecided Roll Eyes Huh?
Hmmmmmm Undecided

Hand tight?  Wasn't an airgun used?  Heck, I would think an airgum would be quicker than bare hands.

Did you see Reed Sorenson's engine fire?  When that baby blew, almost immediately it erupted in a roaring blaze.  The cockpit was filled with white smoke as he struggled to get the car stopped.  Reed was OK, but THAT was scarey.   Shocked

Yup.
Hand tight.
Not this race, but a race or two ago it was explained that all that's required is that five lug nuts be installed. Only four need be tight. So, the car in the yesterace came into the pits and a crew member installed the fifth nut by hand, ---- and off the driver went.

Sorry, I can't remember which race it was but I think it was last week.
Memory, second thing to go. Embarrassed Wink
Anyone else recall the instance?

Hey Chris!!! That's that GREY AREA we hear about LOL. If four is enough then make the hub's 4-lug instead of 5. I would prefer 5 myself if you know what I mean.

LOL.

Now THERE's a contest!  Use "NA$CAR" and "consistent" in a sentence without using the word "not."

OTOH, I suppose if you wrote about tradition and profit (as in "NA$CAR is consistent in putting profit ahead of tradition."), you wouldn't need "not."

Or, "NA$CAR is consistent in putting anybody and everybody who doesn't follow the sport ahead of its long-time fans."

Or NA$CAR Pooh-bah Brian "DUI" France is a consistent menace to palm trees and parked cars.

Yeah SHocky.. You are Right
I've saw it not ONCE but SEVERAL times this season...

lug nuts got put on the put on the right side,.. crew hurried around to the drivers side to change tires,... official sees that there is a lug nut missing and calls it to the crews attention.... ONE of them runs back around to the right side and just threads one on by hand and off the car goes.

NOW I have also heard the announcers say,.. "NO RULE says the lugs have to be TIGHT<.. they just have to be ON"... and THAT IS what the rules say...
How many times have we heard drivers say on their radio they think they have a loose lug nut and decide to stay out and race on it...
If Nascar hears that while they are monitoring the race teams frequency,.. are they then allowed to call that team in and make them pit..??
Nooooooo... so then what happened yesterday should NOT have been allowed to happen,... if all lugs were on,.. he was good to go.

As I have said,.. they have saw a guy put a lug on BY HAND,.. (there by KNOWING it was loose) and it was OK.

Can't find my rule book at the moment but if I remember right the rule says -

All 5 lugnuts have to be on and tight.  Doesn't specify hand tight or airgun tight.
(I'd prefer the latter when I'm going into the corner at 165 mph.)

We've seen in the past incidents where a loose lugnut has caused issues with the wheel.  I've seen centers break out of the wheel due to a loose lugnut.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY . . .

When I go to casinos, the most ridiculous sign I see is the one that says:
"If you have a gambling problem, call 1-800-GAMBLER."

So, I call them and say,
"I have an ace and a six. The dealer has a seven. What do I do?"
