               Q U A L I F Y I N G

If I were the Grand Pooh-Bah of NA$CAR, here's what I'D do for qualifying.

First: EVERYbody would race their way into EVERY race.

Second: Once the top 43 fastest cars have been determined, the FASTEST qualifier would start in the 43rd position, and the LEAST fastest qualifier would start on the pole.

And so on and so forth, etceterra, etceterra, etceterra,...............................

AND,
along with yellow bumpers for the rookies, the slowest qualifiers starting up front would also be required to display those blue "Handicapped" signs.  Tongue

Okay, okay, maybe that would be going too far.  Roll Eyes Wink Grin

Heck After Shock, while you're at it.  Make the slowest qualifers install turn signals and have them stuck on blinking a right hand turn the whole race.  That would make them TOTALLY irritating!

And with your field inversion theory I'd bet the Big One would happen every week by lap 15.  Handicap stickers or not.

Yeah, Shocky, and the first time that 8 car didn't make the field (or the 3 car, as the case may be), if the Red Army didn't getcha, the advertisers and TV people would!   Cheesy

Taking what you are saying one step farther, we could give points for starting position.  43 for 1st, 42 for 2nd, and so on.  The inversion would be worth while that way because you'd still be getting all those points, even though you start so far back.  Having said that, who would want to start 43rd at either of the road tracks, Martinsville or Bristol?  Road races would have to have at least a couple of the corners removed to make it even kind of possible to move to the front.  Sure would make for some interesting racing though.

So why don't they increase the field?  I know they can't do like they had it many years ago where there were 75 cars to start, but NASCAR needs to find the high-low-average for all races in the last several years and come up with a number.

So why don't they increase the field?

Pit stalls are an issue at some tracks, but WTH.  Remember when they started 43 cars at the big tracks and 36 at the short ones?  It's worth a thought, Plano.
