Biffle Takes Bristol Pole

Amy Henderson · Friday March 16, 2012

The NASCAR Sprint Cup field made their qualifying runs on Friday afternoon, and after 44 drivers took their best shot, points leader Greg Biffle was the last man standing, taking the pole for Sunday’s Food City 500 with a 15.324-second lap (125.215 miles per hour) to beat AJ Allmendinger by just one one-thousandth of a second for the top spot on the starting grid. The entire field was separated by just .6 seconds.

Biffle is off to a blistering start in 2012, finishing third in all three races run so far and sitting on top of the point standings, and he’s enjoying every minute. “You have to cherish those moments,” said Biffle, “because you don’t know when you’re going to see them again.” Biffle went on to say that his qualifying laps were a true team effort as they looked for the perfect setup-and they found it in time for their run on Friday as Biffle and crew chief Matt Puccia hit their stride as a team and are staking an early claim as potential title favorites.

Allmendinger will start the race beside Biffle on the front row. Ryan Newman, Jeff Gordon, and Brad Keselowski complete the top 5. Regan Smith, Aric Almirola, Carl Edwards, Joey Logano, and Kasey Kahne round out the top 10. Defending spring race winner Kyle Busch will roll off 13th on Sunday
