Raybestos Rookie NC Education Lottery 200 Advance: Scott Speed

Friday May 16, 2008

RAYBESTOS ROOKIE CONTENDER QUOTES FOR THE NORTH CAROLINA EDUCATION LOTTERY 200 NASCAR CRAFTSMAN TRUCK SERIES RACE AT LOWE’S MOTOR SPEEDWAY, MAY 16, 2008.

Scott Speed is the latest driver to enter the race for Raybestos Rookie of the Year. Speed will be making his fourth NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series start this season in tonight’s race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway and has claimed two top-10 finishes.

SCOTT SPEED, No. 22 RED BULL TOYOTA: WHAT ARE YOUR IMPRESSIONS OF THE CRAFTSMAN TRUCK SERIES? “It’s good. It’s certainly a very, very competitive series and for me it’s the most beneficial right now for my learning curve.” YOU HAVE RACED ALL OVER THE WORLD. HOW DOES NASCAR RACING COMPARE TO FORMULA 1 AND OTHER TYPES OF RACING? “A lot less stressful [smiles]. A lot less money, a lot less stressful and everyone gets along a lot better and there’s Americans in this sport. No Americans over there. It was me. That was it.” YOU LIVED IN EUROPE AND THEN MOVED BACK TO THE UNITED STATES? WAS THAT A BIG ADJUSTMENT? “Oh yeah, a culture shock. But it’s easy. It’s easy for me to go this way because it’s just a breeze. Everyone is nice to each other. The racing is super-fun, it’s laid back. Life is just really good.” IS YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL TO GET TO THE SPRINT CUP SERIES? “No, I’d actually like to stay in truck and just kind of make a living like Mike [Skinner]. He’s my hero [smiles]. Of course I want to go to Cup. I don’t do this because I have to. I do it because I’ve challenged myself, see if I can do it. Go from top of open wheel motorsports to the top of this type of motorsports. It’s a huge personal challenge. It’s very satisfying to have the opportunity to try it. I get along with everyone really good. At the end my home will for sure be with Red Bull. If it’s racing trucks, who knows, but I’ll always have Red Bull on the side of my car. If Red Bull didn’t want me around for some reason and I no longer was benefit to them then great, I’d walk away. All they’d have to do is ask. But as long as they’ll have me I’ll be with them.” WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN NASCAR? “The most challenging? Going around the outside. It just don’t make no sense. Honestly, I mean, passing a car around the outside just don’t make sense.”
