RAYBESTOS ROOKIE CONTENDER QUOTES FOR THE NORTH CAROLINA EDUCATION LOTTERY 200 NASCAR CRAFTSMAN TRUCK SERIES RACE AT LOWE’S MOTOR SPEEDWAY, MAY 16, 2008, PAGE 5.
BRIAN SCOTT, No. 16 ALBERTSONS CHEVROLET: WHAT HAPPENED? “Man, I don’t know. We went through Turns 3 and 4 and somebody got loose, I think it was the 21 truck, and he started going up the track. I had my natural run going and got underneath him and then all of a sudden all I knew was I felt something on my right rear. I have no idea what just happened. Something was on my right rear and then we went through the grass and I think I hit the quarter-mile and it felt like I jumped a little bit and that’s where we took all the damage. It must have killed one of our tires because then going in the corner it just never turned, went up and got against the wall. I just don’t even what happened yet until I see the replay I guess.”
DONNY LIA, No. 71 NATONRIDES.COM CHEVROLET: WHAT HAPPENED? “I got hit there in the left rear and got turned around. I don’t know where the 21 was going. I was up by the fence there and gave him every lane on the racetrack. I guess it wasn’t enough.”
COLIN BRAUN IN THE No. 6 CON-WAY FREIGHT FORD WAS THE RAYBESTOS ROOKIE OF THE RACE AT LOWE’S MOTOR SPEEDWAY.
Notes:
Braun scored a 15th-place finish to claim top Raybestos Rookie honors for the third time this season. He passed Andy Lally on the final lap of the race to claim the honor.
UNOFFICIALLY Braun leads the Raybestos Rookie standings by eight points (64-56) over Justin Marks.
Andy Lally scored a 16th-place finish in tonight’s race, his best effort since he placed 11th in the season opening event in Daytona. Lally runs with Raybestos brand brakes on his Chevrolet.
BRAUN: “It’s good to be the top Raybestos Rookie. We had a truck that didn’t drive very good. I got down the back straightaway over there and started to get this big wiggle so apologize [to Lally] if he thought I was trying to block ‘em. I was just trying to go straight. It was unfortunate that we got caught up in that wreck. We had a truck to win the race. This whole team was doing a great job all night. It’s disappointing when you wreck with 30 laps to go when you’re running for 10th-place or something like that. You would hope those guys would be a little bit smarter about that but I guess that’s racing. It’s still a lot of fun. Had a good race going there with Hornaday and that was fun. Definitely didn’t make it easy for me to pass. He sucked right down on me, tried to turn me around there a few times [smiles] so I learned a lot from that and we finally got ahead of him there. He definitely didn’t make that easy but finally got ahead of him there and checked out to a pretty healthy lead. Then we started to get tight toward the end of our runs. When he got back I just let him go. I pointed him around. I figured I’d do the more veteran thing there, I guess, trying to learn from these guys and let him go. Hopefully that’ll give us something here a little bit later in this season.” YOU AND ERIK DARNELL BOTH RAN WELL TONIGHT. “It’s great. I think we were a little quicker than Erik. I thought we had a little faster truck than him but it was a fun race and it’s great to see all the Roush Fenway trucks do well. Not sure what happened to Travis there but I know we were all fast, that’s for sure. I guess we’ll just have to have a little more racing luck next time.” IS RACING LUCK ALL YOU LACK TO CONTEND FOR WINS? “You look what happens to the 51 and the 33 and the 30 and all those that were up there in the top-five, top-10 and they all ended up wrecking, too. Unfortunately I think the 51 and the 33 were the ones that started that big wreck [smiles] and we just got caught up in it. It’s just an unfortunate deal but I guess that’s the way racing goes. Anybody can wreck any time and you run into the back of them or through the grass and knock the splitter off of it.” ARE YOU STILL LEARNING A LOT? “Still learning every time I do a lap here. Just trying to gain some respect from the veterans like letting Hornaday by, do that kind of thing and show ‘em that I respect ‘em. Hopefully that kind of comes back to help us out in the middle of the season. Hopefully they respect us a little bit and it pays off.”
ANDY LALLY, No. 7 TRG MOTORSPORTS/ADOBE ROAD WINERY CHEVROLET: “We had a string of bad luck the last two races and this was real good. We unloaded with a good truck. We went bad at the end of practice there but then the guys hustled and really defined teamwork to bring me back a real good truck for qualifying and then we had a good truck in the race. I’ve got to apologize to Dennis Setzer. He’s a little ticked off at me and I apologize. There was nothing I ever did intentional. I respect that guy. I’ve been watching him race for years and years. He says I chopped him. If he says it I believe him but it was unintentional. I had a really good race with Colin on the last lap there. He ran me a little low and tried to keep his position, which I’d have done the same thing and I respect him as a competitor, too.”
