NASCAR Truck Series Race 16 of 25 — Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway
Hornaday Looking for Third Bristol Win, First at “New” Bristol:
Ron Hornaday will make his ninth start at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway (BMS) in the NASCAR Truck Series this week, but it will be his second start on the new racing surface at the “The World’s Fastest Half-Mile.” Hornaday has won twice at the .533-mile track (1997 and 1998) on the old surface. Last year, he started 14th and finished sixth on the new surface. In his eight Truck Series career BMS starts, Hornaday has two poles (1997 and 1998), two victories, two top-five and five top-10 finishes. If Hornaday gets his third win at BMS this week, he will become the first Truck Series driver to win on both the old and new track surfaces.
With 10 Races To Go…:
With 10 races remaining in the 2008 NASCAR Truck Series season, three-time Truck Series champion Ron Hornaday leads the series in 10 statistical categories: average starting position (5.0), average mid-race position (7.5), average running position (7.5), times he been passed under green (265), percentage of quality passes (85.5), fastest laps (318), laps in top 15 (2,126), laps led (717), percentage of laps led (28.5) and driver rating (114.5).
From The Driver’s Seat – Quotes From Ron Hornaday:
On racing at Bristol: “Bristol is different with the new surface. It’s slower and has more aggressive banking than before. On the old surface, you could run on the bottom of the track through the turns. With the new surface, it opens the track up a little more. We’ll be on a new tire this year, one that we have never used in the NASCAR Truck Series.
“Rick Ren (crew chief), the No. 33 Camping World crew and everybody at KHI give me great trucks and they are really fun to drive. We are taking a really good truck to Bristol, a truck that we have won with earlier this year, and I know that we will be one the teams to beat when we unload.”
Atop The Pit Box – Quotes From Rick Ren:
On racing at Bristol: “Track position is a key factor at Bristol. Qualifying is as important as the race itself and usually plays into the outcome of the race. But you can work your way from the back and win at Bristol, so pit stall selection and pit stops are also key factors.
“Another thing that is really important at Bristol is that your driver needs to know where he is at on the track. It is easy for a driver to lose track of whether they are on the front or backstretch. The driver needs to know where he is so he doesn’t miss pit road. A lot of times the driver is lapping trucks so fast that I’ll tell him who the next truck for position is and he might have to pass three or four lapped trucks for position.”
Camping World named as Presenting Sponsor of the O’Reilly 200:
Camping World, primary sponsor for the Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) No. 33 NASCAR Nationwide Series and No. 33 NASCAR Truck Series entries, has been named as the presenting sponsor of the O’Reilly 200 at Bristol Motor Speedway. The O’Reilly 200 presented by Camping World RV Sales, will be Wednesday night, August 20, and will be televised live on SPEED Channel at 7:30 p.m., ET. The race will also be broadcast live on the Motor Racing Network (MRN) beginning at 8:00 p.m., ET.
Chassis No. 018 Makes Short-track Return at Bristol:
Crew chief Rick Ren and the KHI No. 33 Camping World crew will be taking truck No. 018 to BMS this week for the O’Reilly 200. This truck has been the team’s primary short-track truck during the 2008 season, with starts at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, Mansfield (Ohio) Motorsports Park, Memphis (Tenn.) Motorsports Park and O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis. Ron Hornaday has driven truck 018 to one victory (Memphis), two top-five and three top-10 finishes. The truck debuted last November at Phoenix International Raceway when Kevin Harvick drove it to a fifth-place finish and led 17 laps in the Casino Arizona 150.
KHI’s Carelli has Seen Bristol From the Ground Up:
Kevin Harvick Inc. general manager Rick Carelli, a former Truck Series driver, has seen races at Bristol Motor Speedway in more ways than one. In 1996, Carelli won the Coca-Cola 200 at Bristol, marking his first victory in the NASCAR Truck Series. In his Truck Series career, he recorded one win, two top-five and two top-10 finishes in four starts at Bristol Motor Speedway. Now Carelli sees races at Bristol Motor Speedway from a different point of view; atop the spotters stand as he spots for Ron Hornaday and the KHI No. 33 Camping World Chevrolet Silverado team. “I think drivers have the best understanding of what it takes to be a good spotter, so it should give you and your team an advantage,” Carelli said. “As a past driver you can watch the lines a driver is using in practice and suggest a different way around the track, because you have an understanding of what the car/truck needs to do to go faster.”
Previous race recap:
Ron Hornaday and the Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) No. 33 Chevrolet Silverado team finished fifth in the Toyota Tundra 200 at Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway on Saturday, August 9, picking up their eighth top-five finish of the season. Hornaday started the race from the 12th position, quickly moved into the top 10 and led three laps late in the race, gaining five championship bonus points. He now trials points leader Johnny Benson by only 45 points going into Bristol Motor Speedway.
