Bill Davis Racing/Tayler Malsam Event Preview
Homestead-Miami Speedway
Ford 200
Homestead-Miami Speedway Notes
· This Week’s Race Truck…The No. 24 Bill Davis Racing team will utilize chassis No. 102 in this Friday’s Ford 200 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Chassis No. 102 is the same truck Scott Speed drove in September at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
· First and Final…Tayler Malsam will make his debut behind the wheel of a BDR Toyota in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series finale this weekend. Malsam, who hails from Sammamish, Wash., comes to the team from the ARCA RE/MAX Series. The 19-year-old driver competed full-time in the No. 4 Dodge Driver Development machine for Georgia-based Cunningham Motorsports in the ARCA RE/MAX Series, where Malsam was a Penske Racing Development driver.
· Nead to Lead…Though Malsam has made just one start in NCTS competition, he will be shown the ropes this weekend by veteran Crew Chief Gene Nead. Nead, who usually handles lead engineer duties for the No. 22 BDR Cup Series entry, will return to the top of the pit box this weekend to lead the No. 24 team. The No. 22 BDR Cup Series team will serve as the pit crew Friday night.
· Thinking Christmas…The No. 24 truck will be adorned with Stocks for Tots decals this weekend. Stocks for Tots was created as a way to bring together stock car racing and its fans, all the while raising awareness of the child abuse problem in North Carolina.
The first fundraiser was held at the Mooresville (N.C.) Armory in December 1989. Since then, the annual event has raised more than $850,000 and has distributed nearly 50,000 Christmas toys. Each year, thousands of people visit Mooresville for the annual event, where they get to see many of their favorite NASCAR & NHRA drivers/celebrities and show cars. This year’s event is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 9 from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. ET.
· Watch and Listen…Qualifying for the event is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. ET, Friday, Nov. 14. The 134-lap race is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. ET Friday, and will broadcast LIVE on SPEED TV, MRN (radio) and Sirius Satellite Radio.
Malsam on Making his Bill Davis Racing Debut…“I’m really excited and pumped up to be racing for Bill Davis Racing this weekend in Homestead. Obviously, BDR is a really great organization, and I’m really pulling for Johnny Benson to win the Championship. Gene Nead has a ton of experience, and I couldn’t ask for a better guy to be leading the team my first time with them. The truck looks great, and I’m proud to be a part of showcasing the 20th anniversary of Stocks for Tots. The opportunity to be a part of the BDR Craftsman Truck Series program and race these Toyota Tundras is something a lot of racers can only dream about, and I just can’t wait to get things started.”
Tayler Malsam – Driver of the No. 24 Stocks for Tots Toyota Tundra
The newest addition to the Bill Davis Racing NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series stable is Tayler Malsam, who hails from Sammamish, Wash. Malsam, 19, began his racing career in go-karts, where he competed at the national level. From there, he moved to the Formula TR Championship, a professional road racing series, before racing in dirt Sprint cars and then moving on to stock cars.
Malsam competed full-time in the 2008 ARCA RE/MAX Series in the No. 4 Dodge Driver Development machine for Georgia-based Cunningham Motorsports, where he was a Penske Racing Development driver.
After breaking into the top 10 in the ARCA RE/MAX championship points at [Rockingham] North Carolina Speedway in April, Malsam remained in the top-10 for the remaining 17 races of the season. The young driver battled to a ninth-place finish in the final point standings.
Highlighting Malsam’s rookie ARCA season were third-place finishes at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway and New Jersey Motorsports Park. He also scored a fifth-place effort on the dirt oval in Springfield, Ill. Malsam qualified especially well on the bigger tracks, lining up in ninth place at Kansas Speedway, sixth at Kentucky Speedway and seventh on the 2.5-mile trioval in Pocono.
Malsam made his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series debut at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway in August 2008 when he drove the No. 41 Dodge Ram pickup for CHS Motorsports.
In November, Malsam joined Bill Davis Racing’s Truck Series program and will pilot a Toyota Tundra full-time for the team during the 2009 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series campaign. He will make his debut for the team in the 2008 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, driving the No. 24 Stocks for Tots Toyota Tundra.
Malsam’s hobbies include karts, personal watercraft, wake surfing, skiing and pyrotechnics.
