Company’s New Car Design and “Rheem Race for a Greener Planet” Promotional Campaign

Aim to Heighten Homeowner Awareness and Use of Rheem Solar Water Heaters

to Lower Utility Bills, Contribute to Resource Sustainability and Greener Living

ATLANTA – Nov. 10, 2009 – Rheem Manufacturing Company, primary sponsor of Kevin Harvick Inc.’s No. 33 Chevrolet Impala, will introduce an exciting new paint scheme dubbed “Sun Runner” to heighten public awareness of the significant energy and cost saving benefits of its solar water heater systems.   The Rheem Sun Runner solar car will be driven by Kevin Harvick in its inaugural run during NASCAR’s Nationwide Series race at Phoenix International Raceway on Saturday, November 14.

Rheem is also sponsoring a consumer contest in collaboration with KMLE-FM, a CBS radio affiliate in Phoenix, called “Race for a Greener Planet” to promote the use of energy efficient home appliances such as heating, cooling and water heating systems.  The contest runs concurrently with the Greenbuild International Conference and Exposition at which Rheem is an exhibitor.  The Expo, dedicated to designing and constructing more energy efficient, eco-compatible buildings, is being held at the Phoenix Convention Center, November 10 – 12.

Rheem, one of the world’s largest producers of residential and commercial water heaters, heating and cooling equipment, swimming pool heaters and commercial boilers, is also a leading producer of energy efficient solar water heaters.  Rheem has more than 80 years of water heating leadership as well as more than 50 years of solar technology experience.

The Rheem Sun Runner 33 sports a sunburst design surrounding the world-famous red Rheem logo disc in the center.   The bright, eye-catching sunburst graphic strikes a dramatic contrast against the black hood, deck lid and upper rear quarter panels.  Sunrays reach out in all directions symbolizing the ever-present power of the sun’s energy and how it sustains all life on the planet. The rear of the Sun Runner 33 declares: “Gotta Have a Rheem Solar Water Heater”.

“Rheem is a perfect partner with KHI because the Rheem culture, like that of KHI, is one of commitment to quality and high-level achievement,” said Kevin Harvick, KHI co-owner and championship driver.  “I can’t wait to drive the new Rheem Sun Runner No. 33 Solar Water Heater car; not only is it a great looking car, it is also a perfect example of Rheem’s dedication to technological leadership and their unending search for creative products that improve the lives of customers by lowering cost and contributing to a greener world.”

Rheem Solar water heaters capture thermal energy in rooftop collectors that look much like skylights and convert about 70 percent of the sun’s heat into useable energy.  Sunlight is collected and converted to heat energy and is transferred from the solar collector to water in a storage tank, where it is stored until needed.  By installing a Rheem SolPak water heating system, owners achieve significant water and energy savings.  It’s estimated that switching from conventional electric or propane water heating systems will save homeowners between $250 and $550 annually on water heating bills alone.  Additionally, an individual solar water heating system saves more than 3,000 pounds CO2 offset annually.

Solar water heating usage is on the rise. According to the Solar Energy Industry Association, solar water heating installations in the U.S. jumped from 6,000 in 2006 to approximately 20,500 in 2008.

“The Federal Stimulus Plan has acted as a catalyst for a new consumer mindset on energy efficient appliances and sustainable living,” say Jeff Mahoney, Rheem alternative energy market manager.  “Through 2016, homeowners can receive a Federal tax credit of up to 30 percent of the total installed cost including labor of a Rheem Solar water heater.”

Rheem recently announced a groundbreaking association with the Valley Electric Association (VEA) to launch the single largest domestic solar water heating program ever undertaken in the United States.  This program offers each member of the VEA, an electrical co-op serving 150,000 residents in Nevada and California, an opportunity to install a Rheem SolPak solar water heating system in their residence.  VEA, Rheem and Ed Begley Jr., host of HGTV’s “Living with Ed,” officially kicked off the program in September.

“In addition to providing affordable solar water heating to nearly 5,000 homes, we anticipate that the program will immediately create more than 100 jobs in Nevada and increase capital in the area by approximately $12 million,” said Mahoney.
