Here’s Hoping the Ponds Aren’t Long for the Coming Weekend Races
Cheryl Walker · Monday June 6, 2005
Pennsylvania weather is such a hoot.
As a great example, for the last several weeks we have been experiencing weather that neither required the furnace at night, nor the air conditioning in the day. Some consider that too cool for summer weather, but for me, it’s absolutely perfect (and it goes without saying it produces pretty nice utility bills as well).
Yesterday, however, when I stepped outside to check on the presence of our cat (regular readers know that a hawk broke through our porch screen and tried to steal our beloved ‘Shawna’, so I do this often now) I was whacked in the face with what felt like 400% humidity. Anyone that has experienced heavy moisture like that knows that it feels like a spongy SAFER barrier in the air. One check of the on-porch thermometer, and I was amazed to see it reading 87 degrees.
I guess it was an indication of my deep-rooted affection for NASCAR that my first thought was, “Oh NO! The races! This coming weekend!”
Sigh. It’s official. NASCAR is heading to Long Pond for the Pocono races. While I had the audacity to think that the beautiful cool weather would be there to enjoy all through the coming weekend, I should have known better.
Does anyone remember the year that there were small lakes on the track at Pocono, because the ground had become so saturated with falling rain that it just couldn’t do anything but lie there on the raceway and ripple in the wind? I do.
I am hoping that is not the case again. I found a link for weather in the other end of my state, and I hesitantly share it with you. If you really want to know that the upcoming weather looks like the following and will undoubtedly change much before the weekend, you’re welcome to click away here:
Friday: Mostly cloudy. Scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon. Highs in the upper 70s. Chance of rain 40 percent.
Friday Night: Mostly cloudy with scattered thunderstorms in the evening…then partly cloudy after midnight. Lows in the lower 60s. Chance of rain 40 percent.
Saturday: Partly cloudy in the morning…then mostly cloudy with scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon. Highs in the lower 80s. Chance of rain 40 percent.
Saturday Night: Partly cloudy. Scattered thunderstorms in the evening. Lows around 60. Chance of rain 40 percent.
Sunday: Partly cloudy. A chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Highs in the lower 80s. Chance of rain 40 percent.
Sunday Night: Partly cloudy. A chance of showers and thunderstorms in the evening. Lows in the lower 60s. Chance of rain 40 percent.
Yes, I know. I am thinking pessimistically, aren’t I? My hope is that I will be proven wrong, and the sun gods will triumph this weekend.
