Pocono a Tire Poppin' Experience- Cup Making the Grade

Dennis Michelsen · Monday June 13, 2005

Pace Laps
NASCAR is entering the dog days of the season, the second hot and humid race in the last two weeks

Great to see the militray chorus doing the National Anthem instead of some famous singer that wants to make the Anthem their song with some silly rendition

Race Grade B
Tire woes kept this from being a more exciting race but the drama and strategy made it interesting even without much passing up front

F for Brendan Gaughan (Or his spotter)
There was alot of time in between the main wreck and Brendan getting into the back of Kyle Petty. I expect better from a driver of Gaughan’s ability.

D for Crew Chief Matt Borland
What was he thinking going with that gas only stop in the late going? Ryan Newman was a sure fire top ten even if he took four tires. Since so many left fronts were popping it was not a great call to put more laps on those old tires.

C for Mike Garvey
First time out with his new team and stayed on the lead lap all day. I would give this team an “A+” if I graded on a curve.

B for Joe Nemechek
Good to see one of the smaller budget teams grab a top finish. Team gets an “A+” for the cool new camo paint scheme too.

A for Carl Edwards
How can a guy win the first time out on a weird track like Pocono? This guy might look like “Opie” but he drives with a killer instinct! Could we be looking at the third Roush champion in a row?
