What does it take to qualify a race as a "Classic"? The answer to
that question differs depending on who you ask! In my opinion this race
has not yet reached "Classic" status since it has very little history
to lean on. Also it has yet to have a finish that can be considered one
of the "Classics"of all time. Oh sure there has been "Drama" but has
there been a race that you can point to and say, "I remember that
finish!" You might recall the race that your favorite driver won here,
but that’s as far as the rememberances will go! Everyone who saw it
remembers that "Classic" finish at Daytona in 1979! Fans still talk
about the night out at Bristol when the Intimidator "Rattled his cage"
and beat Texas Terry. Newer fans still talk about the fender smashing
finish between Ricky Craven and Kurt Busch at Darlington. So
until this race features one of those dramatic finishes it will fall
short of "Classic" status in my book. But there is no denying that this
is an event any time stock car’s finest challenge the legandary
Brickyard.
