After Back-to-Back Podiums, Action Express Eyes Victory At Barber

Tuesday April 5, 2011

BIRMINGHAM, AL: You can’t blame Action Express Racing for being eager to start the Porsche 250 at Barber Motorsports Park on April 9.

Riding a wave of momentum that has seen the two-car effort score podiums in the first two races on the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series schedule, a win is the next logical step for a team that finished 3rd in the season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona and 2nd one month later at Homestead-Miami Speedway. And there’s no team hungrier in the DP garage to make that first win happen this weekend.

“When you fight for a win and finish second, it just makes you that much hungrier,” admits team manager Gary Nelson. “Both the No. 9 and No. 5 have been knocking at the door for a win in the first two events. We’re ready to take it up another notch.”

Despite being winless on the season, a pair of top 5 finishes has the No. 9 Action Express Porsche-powered Riley in a tie for second in points with drivers Terry Borcheller, Joao Barbosa and JC France sharing the spot with the No. 10 SunTrust Racing DP. The No. 5 Porsche/Riley and drivers Darren Law and David Donohue rebounded from a 9th-place effort in the Rolex 24 with a 2nd-place run at Homestead to move to fourth in the standings.

If Action Express were to turn those podiums into a win this weekend at Barber, it certainly wouldn’t be considered an upset.

The 2.3-mile, 17-turn road course has been kind to the team’s drivers since the track hosted its first race back in 2003. In that inaugural event, Borcheller made a last lap pass on France to win the race while Barbosa finished 3rd and won in GTS. Ironically, the top 3 finishers from that first race will all be piloting the No. 9 DP in this year’s event. While Donohue and Law have yet to win at the Birmingham, AL road course, the two finished 2nd there in 2008 and 5th one year ago for Brumos Racing.

Given the team’s hot start and history at Barber, it’s no surprise that expectations are sky high for this year’s running of the Porsche 250. Law attributes that early season success to progress made by the team during the offseason.

“We came out of the winter break strong this year. Having a podium by each of our team cars in the first two races is great and gives us momentum and confidence going into this event,” he said. “This team has gone through a lot of changes and those improvements are starting to show now.”

Whether those improvements lead to a victory at Barber has yet be seen, but as Borcheller – who recorded just one podium for Action Express in 2010 – knows first hand, the team has made great gains from Year 1 to Year 2 and has become a contender week in and week out.

“We were in position for another podium at Homestead-Miami Speedway in the No. 9 car and I think that shows the improvement of both the car and the team,” he said. “We are continuing to push for performance, and I think that will be seen again at Barber.”

The Porsche 250 can be seen on SPEED at noon ET on April 10. For more information on Action Express Racing, go to the team Web site at: www.axracing.com
