The Frontstretch: Voices From the Cheap Seats: Dropping Appeal And Getting Paid What You’re Worth by Jeff Meyer -- Friday March 15, 2013

Much the same as fans who have dropping appeal for NASCAR, Denny Hamlin announced Thursday that he plans to drop the appeal of the fine that NASCAR levied against him for saying the new car was a piece of crap.

As wishy washy as his decision may sound, make no mistake about it, he still doesn’t plan to pay the fine.

“After a lot of thought I have decided not to appeal the fine NASCAR has issued. Dragging myself, my team and NASCAR through the mud for the next 2 weeks would not be good for anyone,” Hamlin tweeted Thursday afternoon. “I firmly believe I am in the right on this issue and will stand behind my decision not to pay. I understand NASCAR will do what they feel is necessary based on my decision. Thanks to all of my fans and peers who have supported me in this decision. I look forward to putting it to rest.”

Denny Hamlin won’t appeal his senseless fine from NASCAR, but he won’t pay it either. NASCAR will just have to come and get it.

I know, the original announcement that he was ‘dropping his appeal’ scared me too! After all, I have yet to hear anyone or read one response to an article that did not support Denny and felt NASCAR execs were, in essence, so dumb that it takes them 2 hours to watch “60 Minutes”.

After reading the full text however, I had to smile and applaud Denny for coming up with an even more creative and subtle way to show his utter disdain at the whole situation. Knowing that he has is boss and basically all of the NASCAR fan base, whether an actual fan of Denny or not, in his corner, Denny has basically said that not only is he not going to pay the fine, he’s not even going through with the process to ‘officially’ say he’s not going to!

NASCAR’s response was typical in it’s transparency as well as this official release indicates:

NASCAR announced today that the $25,000 fine assessed to driver Denny Hamlin on March 7 will be settled per Section 12-3 of the 2013 NASCAR rule book after being informed by Hamlin that he will not appeal the penalty. Hamlin was fined after the sanctioning body determined he had violated Section 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing). NASCAR considers this matter closed. Section 12-3 of the NASCAR rule book allows NASCAR to collect fines from the driver points fund and/or race purse winnings.(3-14-2013)

So there you have it. Denny isn’t even interested in jumping through the hoops to officially not pay and NASCAR just basically will deduct it from the #11’s paycheck. I wonder if they can get the deductions strung out over the course of the year so it doesn’t hurt so much? (That is ‘sarcasm’ for those of you who do not recognize it or are named Sheldon.)

Once, just once I wish that NASCAR would simply do the right thing and admit that they over re-acted in this case. Are they so obtuse that they do not see how such an admission would do more than money can buy to win back fans? It boggles the mind, I tell you!

As for getting paid what you are worth, it is amazing what an (arguably) pretty face and a set of ta-tas can get you in NASCAR. I speak of non other than Danica Patrick.

Forbes has just announced, in its annual rating of driver’s salaries, that Patrick ranks a whopping 7th, with earnings of 12.9 million dollars in 2012. Earnhardt Jr. was of course first, with 25.9 million. Those figures include off track earnings, but still, 7th? Give me a break!

What has the woman done in her career? I’m not trying to sound sexist here but seriously, as a race car driver she is middle of the pack at best, whether it be in open wheel or stock cars.

Maybe if I invest in some silicone and a good plastic surgeon….nah, too hard to find nice women’s shoes in my size!

Stay off the wall (unlike Danica last week)

Meyer – you have got to learn how to proofread. This reads like a sloppy Reddit reply to something.

J., can we, the uneducated, assume you to be a teacher? If so, when does your course start for teaching proper writing? I would be interested in taking the course, if for no other reason but to see if you are as perfect and good a teacher as you make yourself sound!

to me it does not surprise me that danica is in the top 10. she is breaking down walls that for years haven’t been touched. i am neither a fan or foe of DP, but has her opportunites varied from other drivers whose families have paid their way? Time will either be kind or mean and we’ll see if she is around in 5 years. if so good, if not, oh well. why all the hate directed at her? she is just trying to drive and has the opportunity. blame DW and the media and nascar’s PR people. don’t throw stones at her. not that i counted but did any other millionaires hit the wall last week?

03/15/2013 09:37 AM

C’mon Jeff, where are the ta-tas? I’ve looked for them but can’t find’em. I’ve seen boys with bigger ta-tas. With a personality like a rattlesnake it’s hard to see what she has going for her. Oh, yeah, Jaws better known an DW, started this avalanche of “Danica can drive” publicity. Her path into NASCAR has been made smooth as glass while other drivers who can drive have to struggle and often fail. I cannot find a redeeming quality that is worth a tenth of what her reported earnings are. She has brought nothing but discord to this sport.

I predict an epic fail.

03/15/2013 10:19 AM

Jeff, you are very right about how much smarter it would be from a PR side for NASCAR to simply say – we overreacted. But that’s not possible and I’m sure that DW & the rest of the paid shills will be crowing about how great it is that Denny “backed off” and will twist this so it sounds as if NASCAR won.

Except that NASCAR has lost in this fight, in so many ways.

Wonder how the divorce settlement will go for DP now that Forbes has announced her earnings?

Enough of driver interviews, FOX, ESPN, TNT, etc should reduce their staff. Why? Because no one is interested in a driver interview anymore. We love the drivers but don’t want to hear NASCAR rhetoric coming from their mouths. For that reason, many fans, me included avoid all this countdown to green pre-race and post race Victory Lane crap. Its all just NASCAR rhetoric from drivers as well as the network commentators (With the possible exception of Kyle Petty.) I recommend that fans check out’s clock which is based on the drop of the green flag. Flip on your TV´s at that time and avoid much of the NASCAR propaganda

This was a forgone conclusion from the start. Nascar held all the cards. Hamlin could say whatever he wanted, but in the end there was no way he could afford to be suspended. Can you imagine how many breach of contract suits there would have been? Not just for him but, JGR, Nascar, ISC and others. As for Nascar the worst thing they got was some bad publicity. Well, bad publicity is better than no publicity. So the two sides took a way to try and make it as much a win/win as possible. End of story.

Pepper you have it right!! No sense in trying to expand on your statements….Dead on!!

03/15/2013 01:06 PM

face it denny nascar won. if they take it out of your winnings you are paying the fine dumass.

03/15/2013 01:07 PM

I note that nascar applied the penalty to denny. Give me a name nascar. Man up to admitting that you are the
one that handed out the penalty not hiding behind the nascar banner. As for dp, more rasslin type hype.
get used to it dp fans what you saw last week will go on for the rest of the season.

03/15/2013 01:38 PM

Message got through to Denny. pay up or look for more “speeding” penalties.
I won’t appeal, and I won’t pay…. Ha, taking it out of your earnings is paying no matter how you spin it, he caved.
As for DP. I can’t say yet, but I can say for sure that she definitely has more qualifications than someone like the over-hyped Tia Norfleet.

03/15/2013 02:34 PM

Well Jeff you must have not read any of the comments I’ve left then. I Don’t support Denny (& not Nascar either) His comments = Dumb (to soon to tell & HE passed at least 41 cars that day)or Nascar =Dumber (should have taken him aside & said hey lighten up it’s race 2 (&1st with a normal track) & then to say “I’m not paying it = Dumber(you can’t win that & after that comment the appeal had 0 chance) …Guess Joe finally told him to smarten up..Danica We’ll see..(sure wish DW & media would shut up a bit tho) She Brings CASH & that makes her a valuble to Nascar

awww shucks
03/15/2013 03:59 PM

upon reading more of denny’s comments and ripping on other drivers with “no backbone” i am so glad he will not appeal this so we get less of the intelligent comments by Denny himself. i bet Kyle loves how Denny keeps digging his own hole and makes the M+M driver look better. I sure hope those two don’t drag Matt’s demeaner down. i actually like matt

Go to Jayski and see what Denny had to say today. It’s great.

Kudos for Denny at least doing what he can.

To J. Just what is it you have a problem with? My spelling? Punctuation? Sentence structure? Or perhaps you just dont like my style.

I do not write stuff to sound like it came out of a stupid english book. I write as if I were talking to you face to face. Thats my style. Most people like it. Yes, I know proper english. There is a time and a place for it…perhaps if I were writing opera reviews or something.

I ain’t never been out to win any writing awards. I just tell it like it is (in my mind, anyway) and let the chips fall where they may.

The proof reading as far as spelling etc. is what our editors get paid to do and, if you ask them, they say they know my style and am usually a pretty easy edit!

I apologize for any heartbreak or burn that my improper english may have caused you but don’t hold your breath that I will change.

awww Shucks….it’s not hate that is directed toward Danica. It’s more like incredulousness (if that is a word!) or more like ‘Really!?? WTF!!??’
