TweetFinally! Tomorrow Officially Starts Saturday Night!
Voices From the Heartland · Jeff Meyer · Wednesday September 6, 2006
It seems like I've heard it a million times this year: something like, “If the Chase to the Nextel Cup were to start tomorrow…” or “As they run right now…” I can't quite put my finger on where it all started, though, and it is really quite annoying! Wait a minute…oh, yeah! Now I remember…
February 19th, 2006. "Boogity, Boogity, Boogity! As they run right now, Jeff Burton, Jeff Gordon, Elliott Sadler, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, Jamie McMurray, Junebug, Bobby Labonte, Jimmie Johnson and Mark Martin are all in the Chase."
A few hours later. "If the Chase were to start tomorrow, Jimmie Johnson, Casey Mears, Ryan Newman, Elliott Sadler, Tony Stewart, my favorite Junebug, Brian Vickers, Clint Bowyer, Kenny Schrader and Dale Jarrett would all be racing for the Cup!"
February 26th. "What has happened to Carl Edwards? Last week at the start of the Daytona 500, he was solidly in the Chase for the Nextel Cup. Now he is 43rd in the standings, 100 points behind the 10th spot held by Dale Jarrett."
One minute later. "That is true, Darrell, but don't forget, as they run right now, Carl is only 151 points behind points leader Jimmie Johnson, so actually everyone is solidly in the Chase."
A few hours later… "Well, that about wraps it up for us here at California Speedway, formerly known as The Rock. The shopping under the grandstands has been terrific, and if the Chase to the Nextel Cup were to start tomorrow, we now have 48 drivers that are solidly in the running, with Kenny Wallace just 315 points behind the 2006 Champion…oops, I mean points leader, Jimmie Johnson."
March 12th. "Boogity, Boogity, Boogity! Here we are, halfway through March, and we still have 48 guys that are eligible for the Chase to the Nextel Cup as they run right now. If the Chase were to start tomorrow, everyone would be in. Has that ever happened before?"
A few hours later… "As they ran a few minutes ago and if the Chase to the Nextel Cup were to start tomorrow, we have narrowed the field to 39. Again, if the Chase to the Nextel Cup were to start tomorrow, Travis Kvapil, Scott Wimmer, Bill Elliott, Kirk Shelmerdine, Mike Wallace, Mike Garvey, Hermie Sadler, Stanton Barrett, Kenny Wallace and surprisingly, Chad Chaffin would NOT be eligible. One has to wonder if Chad and his team has what it takes to get into this thing since we are so close to the cutoff date, 23 races from now."
March 20th. "Welcome from Atlanta, race fans. Thanks to rain, it has been over a week since we have been able to bring you up to date on the Chase for the Nextel Cup. As they run now…"
"The race hasn't started yet. They're not running now."
"Thanks Darrell! I meant to say, if the Chase for the Nextel Cup were to start tomorrow, 39 dri…"
Oh gawd! Make it stop! I now need to go to a Barry Manilow concert to get this all out of my head.
And to think, that was only 4 races into the season! You want me to recap all 25 races to date heading into this weekend? I didn't think so.
Whoever said, “Tomorrow never comes” obviously has never lived through a Chase season. Tomorrow WILL come…sometime late on this coming Saturday night. And you know what, who cares that “tomorrow” arriving on a September Saturday night may seriously screw with the fabric of the space time continuum; as far as I’m concerned, there is no need to worry. It will only be till next February until the whole darn thing starts all over again!
Until then, if this column were to be published tomorrow, it would be a day late…unless you read it the day after that, then it would be 2 days late; but as it runs now, it is early and is eligible to be edited…unless…oh, never mind…see what they have done to me!
Stay off the wall, (unless like me, you're about to go over it!)
