Frontstretch Sprint Cup Power Rankings : Top 15 Free Agents For 2009
Mike Neff · Wednesday July 23, 2008

The off week presents an opportunity for your Frontstretch writers to weigh in on a different type of power ranking. This week, with Silly Season in full swing, we vote on the Top 15 drivers who are free agents heading into the 2009 season. These are not necessarily Cup drivers per se, but the best drivers available who are not currently signed with Cup teams or driver development deals for the coming season (sorry, Joey Logano — that means you). Some of them will certainly have new contracts before next year, but the question is… where? You and I both know that some of the other names on this list very well deserve a Cup ride… and probably won’t get one.
But that doesn’t mean they can’t make an appearance on this list. Read on to see if you think the latest choices by our Frontstretch writers prove worthy of their ranking — or whether the only job these free agents would get on your team would be sweeping out the garage stall after hours.
How The Rankings Are Calculated: Frontstretch does their power rankings somewhat similar to how the Associated Press does them for basketball or football — writers on our staff will vote for the Top 20 on a 20-19-18-17-16-15…3-2-1 basis, giving 20 points to their first place driver, 19 for their second, and so on. In the end, Mike Neff calculates the points, adds some funny one liners, and … voila! You have the power rankings from our dedicated staff.
| FRONTSTRETCH TOP 15 CUP FREE AGENTS: AS OF JULY 23RD | |||
| Rank | Driver (First Place Votes) | Votes | Career Cup Wins |
| 1 | Ryan Newman (4) | 133 | 13 |
| He put a Penske car in Victory Lane at a restrictor plate race … that alone says a lot about his driving ability. | |||
| 2 | Martin Truex, Jr. (1) | 123 | 1 |
| Probably the best driver who’s hurt the most by an underperforming team. Plus, he spends every non-race day at the Bass Pro Shops — so he basically has a built-in sponsor. | |||
| 3 | David Reutimann | 103 | 0 |
| He’s been doing some good things in subpar equipment (cough, Michael Waltrip Racing, cough) — which means Beak might be a force in a quality ride. | |||
| 4 | Travis Kvapil | 90 | 0 |
| His No. 28 team now has Hitachi on the side of the car this week. At first, we thought it was Hibatchi — which is sad, because think of how great it would be to hear, “Can You Smell What Kvap-il’s Cookin’??!!” | |||
| 5 | Johnny Benson (1) | 76 | 1 |
| Hands down, the most underrated and underappreciated driver since Lee Roy Yarborough. No joke. | |||
| 6 | Dave Blaney | 76 | 0 |
| What this guy does in Bill Davis equipment cannot be underestimated. | |||
| 7 | Scott Speed | 70 | 0 |
| NASCAR’s next big superstar, and Kyle Busch’s biggest threat three years from now all rolled into one. | |||
| 8 | David Stremme | 65 | 0 |
| Most likely going into the No. 12 — although that might not be the best move for Stremme’s career itself. | |||
| 9 | Tony Raines | 62 | 0 |
| His value definitely went up when everyone saw what his replacement is doing in the No. 96 car. | |||
| 10 | Reed Sorenson | 54 | 0 |
| His motivation may not be what it was when he first came into the series, but Reed still shows flashes of brilliance, and could do some things in a good car. | |||
| 11 | Paul Menard | 47 | 0 |
| Menard’s driving has continually improved, and he has a major sponsor in his pocket — you can’t argue with that! | |||
| 12 | Ken Schrader (1) | 44 | 4 |
| He’s done more with less equipment in the last few years than anyone out there. Now, if Schrader could just get Cup to run on dirt again… | |||
| 13 | Regan Smith | 40 | 0 |
| Mark Martin’s endorsement makes up for some of his lack of stats. | |||
| 14 | Scott Riggs | 39 | 0 |
| The right guy in the wrong situation — not one, not twice, but three times. Will he get a fourth chance? | |||
| 15 | Mike Skinner | 36 | 0 |
| Proved that he is the perfect driver for a team that needs a stabilizing force after his performance in the Nos. 27 and 84 cars this year. | |||
| Also Receiving Votes: Jeremy Mayfield (35), Ron Hornaday (34), Johnny Sauter (33), Ward Burton (30), Kenny Wallace (28), Boris Said (26), Todd Bodine (26), Casey Mears (21), Matt Crafton (20), Scott Wimmer (19), Brendan Gaughan (19), Colin Braun (19), Erik Darnell (18), Michael McDowell (14), Jason Leffler (12), Dario Franchitti (11), Brad Coleman (10), Jacques Villeneuve (10), Chad McCumbee (7), Steve Park (6), Jack Sprague (4), Rick Crawford (4), David Starr (2), Tony Kanaan (2), Ricky Craven (1), Kevin Lepage (1). | |||
| Who Voted: Tom Bowles, Kim DeHaven, Cami Starr, Mike Neff, Tony Lumbis, Vito Pugliese, and Bryan Keith. | |||
