It’s probably fair to say that what happens to the used oil, spent brake fluids, coolant and cleaning solvents at the end of NASCAR races is not something that crosses the mind of even the most passionate fan very often – if at all. But as with most every other aspect of the sport, you’ll not be surprised to learn that it is both big business and also a pretty compelling story.
For NASCAR, a company called Safety-Kleen, who is the largest collector and re-refiner of used oil in North America provides the service. The company collects more than 200 million gallons of used oil each year and, through its recycling programs, produces approximately 140 million gallons of high quality lubricating oil.
Overall, the company services more than 145 professional race teams and 65 tracks across North America. The company also provides absorbent products used for cleaning fluid spills inside NASCAR garages and supplies the racing series with industry-leading parts cleaning equipment.
The relationship between NASCAR and Safety-Kleen is going on 24 years, begun all the way back in 1987. And they’re not going anywhere anytime soon, either; just a couple days prior to this year’s Great American Race, the governing body announced it had reached a multi-year agreement to renew its relationship with Safety-Kleen as an official NASCAR partner – a position it’s held since 2004.
“Of all the partnership programs Safety-Kleen is involved in, NASCAR is by far one of the most successful,” said Eric Zimmer, Executive Vice President of Sales and Service for Safety-Kleen. “We are excited to continue this relationship with NASCAR, and proud to help lead the way as the sport continues to make significant inroads in going Green.”
“Safety-Kleen is a great example of a NASCAR partner that is doing good through helping the environment,” said Jim O’Connell, Chief Sales Officer and Vice President of Corporate Marketing for NASCAR. “Everyone in the NASCAR community owes Safety-Kleen a debt of gratitude for helping to keep our sport Green.”
Safety-Kleen is also an “Official partner of NASCAR Green,” a category of sponsors that contribute in a substantial and measurable way to the sport’s goals around environmental conservation and serves as a green demonstration platform while creating jobs. Other sponsors in this category include Coca-Cola, Coors Light and American Ethanol led by Growth Energy.
The partnership between NASCAR and Safety-Kleen is managed by Drew Patey. His first NASCAR experience was the 1976 Southern 500 at the Lady in Black, Darlington Raceway as a guest of Lee Holman from the then-powerhouse team of Holman-Moody. “That day,” he says, just like any first-time fan who gets hooked, “I knew I’d want to get in the race car business.”
Today, Patey oversees the collection of all the oils, automotive waste and fluids used at every sanctioned NASCAR race the length and breadth of the country. The used oil is sent to a Safety-Kleen refinery where it is re-refined for oil to be used by the U.S. Military as well as the Parks and Postal Service. “It’s pretty cool to consider the oil Dale Earnhardt, Jr. used at the Daytona 500 could be used in a Humvee in Iraq,” Patey said. “I’m proud to provide a service to the tracks while helping keep the environment clean and green.”
