NAMRF Slowly Exposing Their True Goals, Part 2

Before you get too deep into this commentary, and if you really want to know what I’m talking about, I strongly suggest that you read an article by free-lance journalist Richie Whitt entitled "NASCAR: Racing or Race-ism”. It can be found at www.richiewhitt.com. It is a bit lengthy, so don’t forget to come back and read this when you are done. Since it is a bit lengthy, as will be my response, this will be a multi-part commentary. Part one can be found at: http://www.frontstretch.com/myer/041015.htm 

Mr. Whitt’s article is supposedly an unbiased report about NAMRF, but after reading it, you may feel, as I did, that Mr. Whitt needs to check on the definition of ‘unbiased’. After all, I found his article from a direct link from NAMRF’s website. NAMRF wouldn’t be so proud of it if it didn’t favor them. You don’t see links to MY articles. Why is that I wonder? Oh well, back to the battle… 

(Whitt) It’s an exclusive, mystery-unraveling, behind-the-scenes look at the most talked about team on the NASCAR circuit, one seemingly on the fast track to accelerating NASCAR’s black-and-white relationship from the checkered flag to the infield: 

(Meyer) That is the last sentence to Mr. Whitt’s article introduction, and if you look closely, it exposes NAMRF’s true intentions. Yes, they are concerned about color in NASCAR, but its not black or white, it’s green. The keyword here is infield. 

At all but the biggest tracks, most camping, etc. is done outside the racetrack. There just isn’t room in the infield for all the campers. Am I to believe that the so-called racism that NAMRF so adamantly purports to exist is only in the infield? Do minorities and women feel completely safe at Bristol, where there is no infield camping? Don’t the ‘Stars and Bars’ fly on Joe Schmoe’s RV at say, Hick’s White Top Campground outside BMS? (Hicks is the owners last name, White Top is the road. Great campground!) Why doesn’t NAMRF attack them? 

The reason is money. NASCAR has infinitely more dough than any private campground. NASCAR can’t control what happens on private ground. NAMRF is too stupid to realize that NASCAR can respond only one of four ways; A. Ban ALL flags in the infield, B. Ban all camping in the infield, C. Ignore them (NAMRF), or D. Pay them money to go away.  Which do you think will happen? My guess is C, with a slight chance of A. 

(Whitt) Tumultuously tilling racing’s deep-seeded Southern roots and forcibly injecting the race card into a sport long dominated by white faces and red necks, NAMRF is cocking its multi-cultural hammer and trying to turn NASCAR into a flathead nail. 

(Meyer) Yeah, I had to read that again a couple of times too! The problem here lies, as it usually does with most minority beefs, is “forcibly injecting the race card”. As I’ve said in past articles, I (and most race fans) don’t judge a person based on their color. We base our judgements on actions. Just as it is wrong for me to go around spouting BS about White Supremacy, don’t come around me spouting your BS about not being white. If you would come to the track as a race-fan and leave your insecurities about your skin color at home, everything would be fine. 

(Whitt) “We’re committed to this cause 100 percent,” said NAMRF director Jirard Brown. “We don’t think making NASCAR races a safe environment for minorities is an outlandish demand. But, from its lack of response and reaction, apparently NASCAR does.” 

A microcosm of the he said/she said impasse, NAMRF claims it was forced to hit the streets with its message after years of being ignored by NASCAR.

(Meyer) Lack of response and reaction? YEARS of being ignored by NASCAR? 

Quoting Mr. Whitt’s own article… In an exclusive interview with www.richiewhitt.com, however, NASCAR officials said they only recently learned of the group’s existence.

“They have an ambush style,” said NASCAR spokesman Ramsay Poston. “It’s a shame they didn’t just come to us first. Had they picked up the phone or walked in our front door, we would’ve been more than eager to sit down and talk with them.”
In what at first felt like a thawing of the ice, NASCAR called NAMRF last week. The sides spoke Thursday and NASCAR also held initial discussions with the production company over the weekend.

Says NASCAR, “We had to make the first call.”

Says NAMRF, “We just wanted to save the best visit for last.  

C’mon boys, which is it? My teenage daughters do a better job of keeping their story straight, and more believable, when they miss curfew! 

(Whitt) And, citing what they considered alarming safety concerns, NAMRF officials canceled their planned protest at of the EA Sports 500 in Talladega, Ala. and instead held a press conference to outline their intentions and future plans. Arriving in a limo at Talladega – likely the southern-bred track’s first ever – Brown addressed a group of about 50 members of the media on the front lawn of the International Motor Sports Hall of Fame.

(Meyer) The only alarming thing to NAMRF was the number of “members” who DIDN’T show up. However, things may be looking up for them. This past weekend, it was reported that a record-setting crowd of 18 showed up to protest the UAW-GM 500! 

The statement about the arriving limo “likely the southern-bred track’s first ever”, is proof to me that Mr. Whitt is either, A. A naïve, unwitting stooge, too dim to see he is being used or, B. An outright liar, after claiming to have no “philosophical attachment” with the NAMRF. You decide. I’ll let his own words speak for themselves.

At the very least, Mr. Whitt is a shining example of liberal journalist twisting the facts. Aside from the absurd assertion that no one has ever arrived at the track in a limo, Mr. Whitt conveniently forgets to mention that where the limo DID arrive, the International Motor Sports Hall of Fame, is a Alabama STATE owned property that is adjacent to the super-speedway. Need another example? Try this one, again from Whitt: “…Brown said as security helicopters buzzed annoyingly close overhead.” Paints a pretty ‘NASCAR is paranoid’ picture doesn’t it? 

Anyone who has ever camped in or near a track in the midst of a NASCAR weekend knows the air is full of mechanical dragonflies…ferrying VIPs, drivers, etc. to and from the track, or the ever-present Speed Channel chopper and the occasional Med-evac. All these unbiased ‘facts’ from a 18 year veteran of the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram.  

Tell me Mr. Whitt, was it your idea or the paper’s idea to go your separate ways?
