Keys to Success: Lenox Tools 301- New Hampshire Motor Speedway
LOUDON, N.H., (June 28, 2008) – Each race weekend, random Dodge Motorsports crew chiefs, drivers, engine specialists and team members give their insight on the ‘keys to success’ for the upcoming race. This week, the green flag drops at the 1.058-mile oval of New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the Lenox Industrial Tools 301.
Track: New Hampshire Motors Speedway (race 17of 36 NSCS point’s events)
Race: Lenox Industrial Tools 301
Track Length: 1.058-miles (301 laps)
Race Record: Jeff Burton, 117.134 mph (July 13, 1997)
Trivia Question: What rule change did NASCAR implement after an on-track incident at Loudon in 2003? (Answer Below)
Bobby Labonte (Driver, No. 43 Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge Charger) “The big key here at New Hampshire is to get your Dodge to turn in the center of the corner. If you can get the car to turn in the center, you can get the power down to drive off. A little horsepower helps too.”
Rodney Childers (Crew Chief, No. 19 Best Buy/Hancock Dodge) “Getting your car to turn off the corner is the biggest key. Normally your car gets really tight center-off here. It’s hard to keep the car turning through the corner while staying on the gas pedal. The guy that can mat the gas in the middle of the corner and keep it all the way on the floor ends up being the best guy out here.”
Ryan Newman (Driver, No 12 Alltel Dodge Charger) “Drive it hard but don’t over drive it. With Loudon being relatively flat, it’s easy to over drive and miss your corner entry and exit.”
Answer to Trivia Question: NASCAR’s ‘Lucky Dog’ originated from an on-track incident at Loudon in 2003. After Dale Jarrett’s car was stuck in the middle of the race track in danger of being hit, NASCAR banned racing back to the caution flag and created the ‘free pass’ to the first car behind the leader not on the lead. The process continues today.
