Keys to Success: Coke Zero 400- Daytona International Speedway
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., (July 4, 2008) – Each race weekend, random Dodge Motorsports crew chiefs, drivers, engine specialists and team members give their insight on the ‘keys to success’ for the upcoming race. This week, the green flag drops at the 2.5-mile oval of Daytona International Speedway for the Coke Zero 400.
Track: Daytona International Speedway (race 18 of 36 NSCS point’s events)
Race: Coke Zero 400
Track Length: 2.5-miles (160 laps)
Race Record: Bobby Allison, 173.473 mph (July 4, 1980)
Trivia Question: Who was the first driver to be blacked flagged at DIS? (Answer Below)
Roy McCauley (Crew Chief, No. 12 Alltel Dodge Charger) “Finding grip for the racecar. The car will fight for overall grip after about 10 laps, and the summer heat will make the track even slicker which will make it harder to grip the track. Our goal will be to give Ryan as much grip as possible to go wide open around the race track. Because at Daytona, it’s the best handling car that wins the race”
Ryan Newman (Driver, No 12 Alltel Dodge Charger) ““The key to Daytona is just staying out of trouble. You want to have a fast car. You want to be up front, because hopefully that’s where the wrecks won’t be. And you have to have a little racing luck on your side—just be in the right place at the right time. You have to have good fundamentals, solid pit stops and you have to keep your fenders clean. You don’t want to knock in what is making you go fast.”
Kenny Francis (Team Director, No. 9 Budweiser Dodge Charger) “A 400 mile race at Daytona in the summer means your car better handle well. You have to make sure that you car has enough grip so that you can run through the corner faster than everyone else. That’s critical.”
Answer to Trivia Question: Herman Beam. The infraction – Beam forgot to put his helmet on before a Twin 100-mile qualifying race on Feb. 12, 1960, and was parked for the remainder of the race.
