Truex Strong at Watkins Glen, Comes Home 5th
Monday August 11, 2008
Watkins Glen, NY (Aug. 10, 2008) – Martin Truex Jr. got the top-five finish he and his team desperately needed, coming home fifth in Sunday’s Centurion Boats at The Glen. It was Truex’s third top-five of the season, and moved him up to 16th in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points, 209 points out the final transfer spot (12th) for the Chase.
“We’ve struggled some lately, so this couldn’t have come at a better time for us,” Truex said. “Mike (Greci) and the guys gave me a great car today. We really didn’t have to make any changes to it all day.”
Truex started the event in the 18th position after the field was set by owner points because qualifying was rained out on Friday.
The Bass Pro Shops/Tracker Boats Chevrolet immediately showed itself to be one of the strongest cars in the field. Truex piloted his Chevrolet into the 10th position on lap 15 and had taken the fifth spot by lap 21. He would stay in the top 10 for the remainder of the event.
Truex brought his car down pit road for the final time on lap 59 while running in the second position. Greci called for a gas only stop and his driver reentered the race in ninth.
Ryan Newman spun on lap 77 and Greci instructed his driver to begin saving fuel.
The race restarted on lap 81 but a massive nine-car accident on the next lap brought out the red flag. The event was halted for 45 minutes while track officials cleaned up the debris.
The final dash for the checkered flag began on lap 85, with Truex running in the fifth position. The Mayetta, NJ native was able to hold off a hard-charging Kevin Harvick and hold that position as he crossed the finish line.
“I had a lot of fun out there today,” added Truex. “The car was awesome and I’m really proud of my guys. Hopefully, we can carry this momentum to Michigan.”
