Sunday September 7, 2008

DLP® HDTV Team Race Report
Schrader, DLP HDTV Team Finish 27th at Richmond

Date: Sept. 7, 2008
Event: Chevy Rock and Roll 400 (Round 26 of 36)
Series: NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
Location: Richmond (Va.) International Raceway (.75-mile oval)
Start/Finish: 40th/27th (Running, completed 400 of 400 laps)
Winner: Jimmie Johnson of Hendrick Motorsports (Chevrolet)

Ken Schrader finished 27th in Sunday’s rain-postponed Chevy Rock and Roll 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway.

Schrader, driver of the No. 96 DLP HDTV Toyota Camry for Hall of Fame Racing, started 40th but quickly gained spots in the 400-lap event, despite battling a loose handling condition early in the race.

However, save for a brief stint in the top-20 due to pit strategy, Schrader and the DLP team stayed between 20th and 30th throughout most of the event.

“We had a pretty decent car,” Schrader said. “We passed a lot of cars, but it was kind of a frustrating day with where we finished. I think we could’ve had a little better result.”

Hampering Schrader’s effort was a late-race pit road collision with Ryan Newman, who was pitting in the stall behind Schrader. Newman pitted but only took two tires, and has he pulled out of his pit box, Schrader was entering his stall to begin his pit stop. The collision caused moderate damage to the right-rear of Schrader’s DLP Toyota.

With the 27th-place finish, the No. 96 Hall of Fame Racing entry remains 39th in the series’ owner standings with 1,704 points, 205 markers behind the 35th-place No. 00 team of Michael Waltrip Racing.

Jimmie Johnson won the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 to score his 37th career Sprint Cup victory, his fourth of the season and his third at Richmond. Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Mark Martin rounded out the top-five. Jeff Burton, Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon, David Reutimann and Kurt Busch comprised the remainder of the top-10.

There were 14 caution periods for 71 laps, with all 43 drivers able to finish the 400-lap race.

Richmond marked the last race of the regular season, as the Chase for the Sprint Cup is now on. Only the top-12 drivers in points are eligible to compete for the Chase for the Sprint Cup. NASCAR recalibrated the points for those in the top-12 as soon as the Richmond race was over, with each driver getting 5,000 points, plus 10 bonus points for each of their respective wins during the regular season. (Carl Edwards was docked 10 bonus points for failing post-race inspection after his win at Las Vegas.) For drivers starting the Chase with identical point totals, their seed was determined by the traditional tiebreaker of best finish beyond race victories.

Ranked in order of where their bonus points seeded them, the drivers competing for this year’s championship are:

1. Kyle Busch (5,080 points)
2. Carl Edwards (5,050 points, -30)
3. Jimmie Johnson (5,040 points, -40)
4. Dale Earnhardt Jr. (5,010 points, -70)
5. Clint Bowyer (5,010 points, -70)
6. Denny Hamlin (5,010 points, -70)
7. Jeff Burton (5,010 points, -70)
8. Tony Stewart (5,000 points, -80)
9. Greg Biffle (5,000 points, -80)
10. Jeff Gordon (5,000 points, -80)
11. Kevin Harvick (5,000 points, -80)
12. Matt Kenseth (5,000 points, -80)

The next event on the Sprint Cup schedule – the first race of the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup – is the Sept. 14 Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon. The race begins at 2 p.m. EDT with live, high-definition coverage provided by ABC beginning with its pre-race show at 1 p.m. The race will also be broadcast live on SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 128.
