WIX FILTERS LAP LEADER NOTES FOR THE AMP ENERGY 500 NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES RACE AT TALLADEGA SUPERSPEEDWAY, OCTOBER 5, 2008, PAGE 1.
· Tony Stewart led four times for a race-high 24 laps to earn WIX Filters Lap Leader of the Race honors in today’s AMP Energy 500, taking the honors for the fourth time this season. Stewart has led 580 laps in 13 different races this season.
· Stewart also led the most laps in the 2008 Aaron’s 499 at Talladega, leading a race-high 61 laps. He has led the most laps in two of the four most recent fall races at Talladega.
· Stewart won today’s race, crossing the finish line .052 seconds ahead of second-place Paul Menard. The victory was the first for Stewart this season and this 10th top-five.
· UNOFFICIALLY Stewart is seventh in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship standings, 32 points behind sixth-place Kevin Harvick and 29 ahead of eighth-place Jeff Gordon.
· DID YOU KNOW? The driver leading the most laps has scored four wins in the 11 most recent fall races at Talladega: Stewart and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (2001, 2002 and 2004).
· A NEW RECORD: The AMP Energy 500 set a new record most different leaders (28). The previous record for most different leaders in a race at Talladega was 26 (twice, most recently in 2001).
· STEWART QUOTES: “Well obviously the lap that everyone wants to know about is that last one, really, I think. We got a good restart there and just made sure that we didn’t get out too far to where we didn’t get a big gap to where they could get a run on us. And coming off of two on the last lap Regan [Smith] got right to the bumper and man, gave us a great push down the backstretch and I thought if we could stay, if I could keep him glued to the bumper like that, we had a shot just cruising on and getting the two of us getting away from everybody. But when he came off the bumper in the center of the corner I though ‘Oh, this is bad news’ because we were going to get that gap in there that we didn’t want. SO I saw the run coming. I made a counter move early enough to get him committed to one direction and I got back down to the line quick. It’s a tough position to be in when you’re the first guy. It’s a tough position when you’re the second guy but we were able to finally get that first win at Talladega. There’s only three of them left that we haven’t won at now. And like Joe said [Gibbs, car owner] it’s 33 in 10 years for this group sitting up here and it’s something that we’re all very proud of.”
