ESPN Analyst and Two-Time NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Crew Chief Tim Brewer on Lowe’s Motor Speedway
Tuesday October 7, 2008
Tim Brewer, NASCAR analyst for ESPN, won two NASCAR Sprint Cup championships, 53 races and 55 poles during his career as a crew chief.
Q- What’s the toughest aspect of setting a car up for Lowe’s Motor Speedway?
“Drivers practice in the daylight and they race at night. This racetrack is more heat sensitive than any other race track we go to and naturally everybody wants to do well there because about 90 percent of the teams are based in the Charlotte area. You have all your friends and family watching so it makes you want to do really well there.”
Q- Does racing at night make it harder or easier for the drivers and teams, and why or why not?
“Temperature-wise it makes it better for the drivers because it’s simply cooler in the race car. Anytime you can race at night, the race track is cooler so there is more grip, meaning the car is going to stick to the track better. But, by the same token, that means everyone is going to race faster and you have to be up at the wheel and be really aggressive at driving the car. The cars just drive a lot better at night.”
Q- What’s something unique about Lowe’s that fans should watch for during the telecast?
“It comes back to strategy. All crew chiefs like to win the race by calling the shot that wins the race on pit road. To have a successful day is what it’s all about.”
