Nemechek, Furniture Row Racing Looking to Break Martinsville Jinx
Wednesday October 15, 2008
MARTINSVILLE, Va. (Oct. 15, 2008) — If one race track has been an achilles heel for the No. 78 Furniture Row Racing team it’s Martinsville Speedway, site of Sunday’s Tums QuikPak 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race.
While driver Joe Nemechek and the single-car team have crossed many positive hurdles this season, there’s one more to conquer and that’s to qualify at Martinsville. The Furniture Row team has failed to make the 43-car lineup in the last three Cup races at the half-mile flat track, located in southern Virginia.
“No question, Martinsville has been a sore point, but we’re an improved team and I feel positive that we’ll have a different result this weekend,” said Nemechek, a former Martinsville pole winner. “As they say in the business world, we’re trending in the right direction.”
Nemechek has qualified the No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Chevy in 18 straight races and 28 of the 31 Cup events contested this season. Included in his qualifying efforts in 2008 is a pole (spring race at Talladega) and three top-fives and four top-10s.
“For a single-car team which has been around for a only short time, we’ve done a lot of good things this season,” added Nemechek. “No question, there’s improvement to be made, but what’s encouraging is that we’ve come a long way.”
Including Sunday’s race at Martinsville, there are five races remaining in the 2008 season. The others are: Atlanta (Oct. 26), Texas (Nov. 2), Phoenix (Nov. 9) and Miami (Nov. 16).
