Last Race of 2008 Season Caused Heartburn And Indigestion For Everyone Except Jimmie Johnson in the Top 10 TUMS Moments
Friday November 21, 2008
Miami, (Nov. 21, 2008) – The final race of the 2008 season at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Miami, Fla. for the Ford 400, had stars and fans of the Sprint Cup Series experiencing severe heartburn. From Jimmie Johnson racking up a virtually unbeatable points lead to several drivers ending their season without a single visit to victory lane, drivers and fans experienced more than a few TUMSâ moments in Miami. Each weekend during the 2008 race season, PRN lead anchor Doug Rice picked the Top 10 TUMS Moments from the weekend’s racing activities.
This week’s Top 10 TUMS honors go to:
10. Sam Hornish Jr. wrapped up a rough season by failing to qualify for the season ending race at Homestead-Miami; it has to get better next year Sam.
9. Kurt Busch started off the season with a second place finish in the Daytona 500. Since that time there has been little to celebrate except for a rain shortened win in New Hampshire. In the last race of the season Bush finished in last place.
8. Dale Earnhardt Jr. fans couldn’t wait for this year to start after Junior joined with Hendrick Motorsports to create a dream team in the making. Now that the season’s ended, the dream is over. Junior won a single race in 2008 and the team fell out of the top ten, which means there will be no visit to the New York banquet for NASCAR’s most popular driver.
7. A lack of drama seemed to over shadow the season ending race. Jimmie Johnson’s points lead was virtually unbeatable and that robbed the race of any real tension.
6. Tony Stewart was unable to leave Joe Gibbs racing with a final parting gift after he finished 9th in the last race. Now its Tony’s mission to build his own dynasty …something tells me TUMS might be in order.
5. Ryan Newman failed to dial up a winning combination in his final race in the Alltel Dodge. With the exception of winning the Daytona 500, the Rocketman never really lifted off this year; a definite failure to launch.
4. As a result of a 40th place finish at Homestead, Jeff Burton dropped two positions in the final standing for 2008. Unfortunately for Jeff, his pay envelope just got a little lighter.
3. Several past winners in the Sprint Cup Series ended the year being shutout, including: Jamie McMurray, Kevin Harvick, Matt Kenseth, Juan Pablo Montoya, Martin Truex Jr., Elliott Sadler, Michael Waltrip and Bobby Labonte. Maybe not a big surprise when you consider that Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson combined to win 23 races, that didn’t leave a lot of leftovers.
2. Carl Edwards, ended the season on a torrid pace but was never really able to threaten the huge lead that Jimmie Johnson had built. However, Edwards has to be happy to be the driver that collected the most trophies with a total of nine race wins in 2008.
1. I left Jeff Gordon off the list of other non-winners because this marks the first time since his rookie season in 1993 that Gordon has failed to win at least one race. This has got to be hard on the four-time champion to walk away from a season without a single checkered flag. Look for the champ to down a few TUMS and rally back in 2009.
