Max Papis top Raybestos Rookie in Checker O'Reilly Auto Parts 500 Qualifying
Monday November 16, 2009
JOEY LOGANO, No. 20 THE HOME DEPOT TOYOTA: “It feels really close and went back and looked at my line and my line in one and two was a lot different than most cars. We decided we were going to change my line and I did and there’s some bumps going down into one and got the nose bouncing and locked up the left front. We still picked up two tenths from what we ran but really we had a bunch more I felt like if we didn’t lock up with left front. I feel like we gave up most of the speed into one and through the center, was able to do good off the corner on the back straightaway. One and two has been my trouble corner.” THIS IS TECHNICALLY A SUPERSPEEDWAY BUT IT MUST DRIVE LIKE A SHORT TRACK. “Yeah it’s a short track. You’ve got a lot of braking, a lot of stuff like that. It’s kind of similar to New Hampshire a little bit especially three and four. I think our race trim stuff is not that bad but everyone is really close. We’ll see how the race goes. I don’t know where we’re going to end up, probably high-20s probably, maybe 30th. I’ll have my work cut out for me [smiles] but it’s a long race and if we get this thing driving good tomorrow we’ll gain some spots the first few laps would be great.”
MAX PAPIS IN THE No. 13 GEICO TOYOTA WAS THE TOP RAYBESTOS ROOKIE QUALIFIER AT PHOENIX. “I’m ecstatic. This may be one of the most difficult racetracks I’ve ever been with, you know, this kind of cars. We started running a 30-flat and we ended up qualifying at a 26.98 so that’s a huge improvement. Really proud of all my guys and I follow my instinct. I was slipping and sliding in qualifying but at the end it paid off and that’s the name of the game: follow your instincts.” HAVE YOU BEEN TO PHOENIX BEFORE THIS WEEKEND? “I never actually raced here. I tested here a lot with different kind of cars but I never had a chance to race so I’m really excited about it.” WHAT COULD YOU HAVE DONE TO MAKE THE LAP EVEN BETTER? “I’m happy [smiles]. I don’t look back. I’ve done all I could. I’m so proud.”
SCOTT SPEED, No. 82 RED BULL TOYOTA: “It was horrible but we qualified horrible in Texas and had a great weekend so we can still do something with it [smiles].” THIS TRACK IS TECHNICALLY A SUPERSPEEDWAY BUT IT MUST DRIVE A LOT LIKE A SHORT TRACK. “It drives a lot like a short track that’s for sure. It is a short track but it’s cool because both corners are different so it gives us a bigger challenge to set the cars up for sure.”
ROBERT BARKER, CREW CHIEF, No. 13 GEICO TOYOTA: THIS IS ONE OF THE BETTER QUALIFYING EFFORTS FOR THIS TEAM THIS SEASON. “We did well at California and some others. It was fulfilling because Max hadn’t been here really in this type of car and we had to work for it and got a lot better. We started running 29.90s so we picked up three seconds [laughs]. Most people don’t realize but three seconds is unheard of so that was great.” THIS IS A DIFFICULT PLACE TO QUALIFY. “Like Max says it’s very technical. Both ends of the track are different so it requires different things. It is difficult.” WHAT WOULD BE A GOOD RUN FOR YOU HERE ON SUNDAY? “Just get all the laps in, attack it and gain experience.”
NOTES:
- Papis will start 23rd here on Sunday. This is his best qualifying effort since he qualified 15th at Auto Club Speedway (race No. 30).
- All three Raybestos Rookies that entered the Checker O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 qualified for the race: Papis, Logano (27th) and Speed (37th).
